Job Summary:
The Custodian is responsible for cleaning and maintaining assigned areas. Works closely with Lead/Head custodian to provide an environment for students, teachers and other employees that is a credit to the custodial/maintenance profession. May be assigned to special custodial/maintenance projects related to the needs of the district.
Essential Duties (May include, but not limited to):
- Ensures assigned areas are neat and clean; keeps floors in clean and attractive condition according to district standards.
- Operates equipment, i.e. floor scrubbers/polishers, carpet cleaning equipment, tractors, lawn mowers, snow removal equipment, and leaf blowers as appropriate to the assignment.
- Assists in the maintenance of equipment, vehicles, machinery, heating and air conditioning equipment in the assigned area in accordance with owner operation manuals.
- Drives district-owned/personal vehicles between facilities, to and from business establishments, repair shops, etc., as appropriate to the assignment.
- Keeps assigned exterior areas and premises including sidewalks, driveways, grounds and outdoor learning centers, safe, neat and clean at all times as appropriate to the assignment.
- Sets up, arranges and moves furniture and equipment for meetings and other events within and between facilities as required.
- Responsible for opening, closing, and overall building security as assigned.
- Cleans rooms, toilet facilities, corridors, walls, floors, windows and other areas in accordance with district standards.
- Documents daily work activities on forms as established for the program/assignment.
- Reports supply and repair needs to building Lead/Head Custodian.
- Regulates and maintains proper temperature standards as assigned.
- Performs minor repairs and preventive maintenance and maintains equipment/building/grounds.
- Communicates with building Lead/Head Custodian on building/grounds needs that relate to building appearance, safety, inspections of equipment, bleachers and access ramps, as appropriate to the assignment.
- Must be physically able to bend, stoop, lift, squat, carry, stand, climb, push/pull and use other motor skills necessary to perform the essential duties as needed in the assigned area of responsibility.
- Follows daily work schedules and communicates work that was not completed to Lead/Head Custodian as assigned.

Other Duties: * Sees that the American flag is flown each work day and is displayed within the building in an appropriate manner. Flies, displays and stores the American flag in accordance with recommended governmental standards.

Qualifications:
Education:
High School diploma or equivalent.
Demonstrated use of custodial/maintenance equipment required. Valid Michigan driver’s license required. Certificate in Fork Lift Truck operation preferred.
Experience:
One (1) year of custodian/substitute custodian with the Genesee Intermediate School District required.
Skills/Other:
Demonstrated competence in building care and maintenance. Ability to accept direction and follow oral and written instructions. Demonstrated dependability, trustworthiness and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Ability to demonstrate proper use of equipment, i.e. floor scrubbers/polishers, carpet cleaning equipment, tractors, lawn mowers, snow removal equipment and leaf blowers. Ability to utilize district technology, and work to maintain proficiency, as required skill sets change with technology and/or the needs of the district. Reliable transportation required for travel throughout the district, as needed. Punctuality and good attendance are requirements for the position. Ability to work flexible work day, work week, and work year in order to meet the changing needs of the district. Demonstrated problem solving skills. Demonstrated ability to work as a team member in a variety of custodial/maintenance-related assignments in order to meet the changing needs of the district required. Ability to exercise good judgment and follow board policies and established administrative guidelines.
