Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY:

Our growing organization is currently accepting applications for the role of Safety Intervention Coordinator III. A successful candidate centers on non-violent crisis intervention, harm reduction, trauma-informed, and restorative and transformative justice frameworks. This role is responsible for the care, well-being, safety, and health of clients, patients, participants, and staff of Howard Brown Health (HBH). This position requires advanced communication, crisis intervention skills, and violence prevention and intervention best practices. The Safety Intervention Coordinator helps support the goal of improving the emotional, physical and psychological, health, safety, and well-being of clients, patients, and participants of Howard Brown Health.


PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist staff in verbal and physical de-escalation of clients, patients, and participants using HBH’s approved methods of crisis prevention and intervention.
  • Maintain the highest level of client confidentiality and professionalism; follow HIPAA regulations; performs duties according to approved policies and procedures relating to OSHA and Standard Precautions.
  • Lead non-violent and culturally competent crisis responses with clients, patients, and participants who have experienced trauma and whose coping mechanisms may involve inflicting harm on others.
  • Tour the assigned facility on an hourly basis to identify irregularities, observe protection and fire equipment, upholding clinic guidelines for behavioral expectations of clients, patients, and participants.
  • Address and resolve highly complex issues, referring only the most complex issues to Safety team managers and leaders.
  • Demonstrates commitment to Howard Brown Health mission, vision, and values.
  • Enforce regulations for the facility with regard to the premises, personnel, and visitors
  • Ensure the care, welfare, safety, and security of all staff, visitors, and the physical location.
  • Provide excellent customer service to all clients, patients, participants, and staff.
  • Adhere to all HBH policies and procedures.
  • Maintain compliance with local, state, and federal laws and regulations, while maintaining a safe and welcoming physical environment.
  • Openly communicate any conflicts, emergencies, and incidents of client, patient, or participant escalation to HBH management and leadership.
  • Respond immediately to crises and emergencies, providing necessary direction to clients, patients, participants, and staff and leading resolution efforts.
  • Protect HBH assets relative to theft, assault, fire, and other safety issues.
  • Follow procedures for various initiatives, including fire prevention, property patrol, verbal de-escalation, traffic control and incident investigations.
  • Escort staff to and from vehicles, bus stops, and CTA stations by request.
  • Provide formal and informal mentorship and supervision of Safety Intervention Coordinators employed at levels I and II.

OTHER DUTIES:

  • Uses proper body mechanics while performing all assigned duties.
  • Remain alert and aware of the surroundings at all times.
  • Able to think clearly and respond appropriately and calmly, during crisis or high-stress periods.
  • Possess and utilize empathetic abilities when dealing with clients, participants, patients, and staff.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work with others and interact appropriately.
  • Maintains communication with other managers and relays information regarding events or situations that may affect operations.
  • All other duties as assigned.


WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • As a network of community health centers, each site presents its own uniqueness and individuality. Safety Intervention staff are responsible for understanding the scope of services offered at their site in order to better serve the clientele and staff each day.
  • Howard Brown Health embraces and advocates for implementing restorative justice practices within the network. Safety Intervention staff are responsible for providing a safe and responsible “first response” to escalated situations at any of our sites
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time.
  • Must be flexible to work scheduled and non/scheduled hours as required. The Intervention staff will be placed at any site within the HBH portfolio

EXPECTATIONS:

  • Safety Intervention staff must complete all required HBH trainings within the first 90 days of employment. These trainings include, but are not limited to ALICE, CPI-NCI, CPR/First Aid/AED, and any additional required trainings.
  • Safety Intervention staff are responsible for actively participating in daily/weekly/monthly staff meetings, phone calls, huddles, CHAT, etc.
  • Keep a daily report log and report all emergencies to site leadership and Safety Intervention Manager immediately


QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILL REQUIRED:

  • 18+ years of age
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Capable of following complex instructions
  • Experience conduction threat assessments
  • Experience interrupting workplace violence
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills
  • Offering the highest levels of integrity and professionalism
  • Active participation and leader of HBH trainings and certification courses/activities (i.e. CPI, CPR, ALICE, etc.)
  • 4-6 years of previous safety experience
  • Knowledge of safety and security operations and procedures
