Work Schedule Summary
  • The Resident Director for Residential Education is a full time, live-in staff member.
  • The Resident Director for Residential Education will keep regular office hours. Evening and weekend commitments will be required to fulfill duties of the position.
  • While serving on-call, the RD will remain within a 20-minute response time of the University. RDs are expected to serve on call during holidays, weekends, and evenings as needed to ensure 24/7 coverage. On-call responsibilities are split among staff members.
  • Essential Personnel: This position is considered to be an essential personnel position for the department, and as such, must be accessible and available in the event of emergencies or when needed to meet the ongoing mission of the University.

NOTE : The majority of Resident Director work will be completed in-person on-site with some options for work from home.

Job Summary We are seeking several RDs to join our team as soon as possible. There are several roles for immediate start and also positions for a June start date. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis and are open to both TPE and non-TPE candidates. The Resident Director position is a 12 month, full-time, live-in, professional staff position within Housing & Residential Education and the Student Affairs Division at the University of Utah. Reporting to an Assistant Director, Resident Directors manage either an area or a program for the benefit and support of our residents. The University of Utah and the Department of Housing and Residential Education are in an exciting period of rapid growth and change. Our city and campus are evolving and, therefore, so is our department! Flexibility and adaptability are essential and the RDs will be supported through these adjustments by their supervisor as needed.
Responsibilities 1. Supervision
  • Train, supervise, and evaluate a staff of 10-17 Student Leaders.
  • Indirectly mentor our departmental Graduate Assistants with the goal of fully preparing them to be a professional in the field of Student Affairs and/or Housing.
  • Meet regularly with supervisees on an individual and group basis, while directly overseeing student staff meetings and functions.
  • Provide training and ongoing professional development for student staff.


2. Administrative Tasks
  • Assist in the development and proper interpretation of policies and procedures among staff and students.
  • Serve as a liaison to Administrative Services, Accounting, and Facilities staff regarding resident management as needed to support residents and manage spaces.
  • Serve on or Chair a Residential Education committee to assist with essential team tasks such as Student Leader selection and training.
  • Maintain an area budget and approve staff expenditures in accordance with purchasing guidelines.
  • Work to advance the University, Division of Student Affairs, and HRE’s strategic plan through participation in goal setting, program implementation, committee/task force work and assessment efforts.
  • Attend various meetings on a weekly/biweekly basis including, but not limited to: Residential Education staff meetings, area staff meetings, committee meetings, and weekly meetings with students and supervisors.
  • Participate in and/or manage large scale annul processes such as training, opening/move-in, evaluations, etc.

3. Emergency and Crisis Response
  • Take part in a 24/7 on-call duty rotation along with all HRE Resident Director staff.
  • Respond to emergency situations and assist in resolving resident and facilities concerns and needs.
  • Provide appropriate post-crisis referrals and follow-up with students and staff as needed.
  • Serve as a liaison with the University Police Department, Dean of Students, and Counseling Center.
  • Share responsibility in maintaining health, fire, and safety standards.
  • Serve as a Campus Security Authority for the University of Utah and assist in reporting incident information as needed.

4. Curricular Approach Management and facilitation
  • Direct student leaders in functional areas to facilitate lesson plans and meet learning outcomes defined by HRE’s Residential Learning Model (RLM).
  • Oversee the development of a community and educational environment that encourages student engagement, positive relationships, and student success.
  • Assist with annual edits and updates to continue the growth of the RLM.
  • Support assessment measures to ensure resident learning is occurring as a result of RLM efforts.
5. Facilities Management
  • Work with the building team (Custodial Crew Leader and Maintenance Mechanic) on the management of spaces.
  • Walk through community spaces on a regular basis to identify cleanliness, maintenance, and upgrade needs.

6. Student Conduct
  • Respond and process alleged policy violations as reported by staff, students, University Police, or community members utilizing HRE’s Advocate software package.
  • Serve as a primary hearing officer for high level cases leading up to eviction occurring within buildings of direct responsibility.
  • Train, instruct, and oversee graduate assistants in their role as hearing officers during the student conduct process.
  • Maintain due process and a learning-centered philosophy when sanctioning and engaging in the conduct process.

7. Community Relations
  • Maintain close communication and positive relationships with residents, students, and professional staff. Coordinate and represent the Housing & Residential Education Department on committees, recruitment activities, or projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in a related area plus two years experience in residence life management, programming, student activities or equivalency required. Demonstrated supervision, organization, planning, group dynamics, human relations and effective communication skills also required.

Master’s degree in College Student Personnel or related area and one year post-master’s related experience preferred.
