Job Description

The Resident Assistant (RA) position, a key student leader within the residence halls of Iowa Western Community College. RAs are community role models and friends to all residents. It is important to understand the unique nature of working and living within a residence hall as it requires skills such as customer service, roommate mediation, on-call duties, incident documentation, planning and working events and assisting with the staff throughout the school year.

Duties
  • Foster community within the residence halls through interpersonal interactions, social gatherings, and hosting/attending campus programs and events
  • Actively maintain good working relationships with teammates and Residence Life Coordinators (RLCs) with a focus on leadership, mentoring, fostering community pride, and communicating community needs to RLCs
  • Positively impact residents on a daily basis by focusing on interpersonal relationships and actively strive to spend significant time with students than spent privately, outside the halls, or exclusively with staff members
  • Address resident needs and concerns as they arise with a focus on mediation, mentoring, and guiding them through solution focused, problem solving skills, and self-governance
  • Complete monthly bulletin boards and programming requirements with a focus on community needs, student interests, or topics provided by RLCs
  • Consistently contribute to the team by respecting staff, sharing responsibilities such as desk shifts, on call duties, and maintain open communication with staff
  • Understand, explain, and enforce Housing Rules and Regulations and Student Code of Conduct policies within the residence halls with a focus on respecting the community and fostering a sense of pride and ethical behavior amongst all residents and staff
  • Maintain a secure residence hall by working the front desk. Front desk duties typically include but may not be limited to: answering phone calls, answering questions, giving directions, enforcing guest policies and building entry policies by monitoring people entering and exiting the building, package sign out, game equipment sign out, and reporting facility issues and emergencies to the proper authorities
  • Handle student information with confidentiality and follow all FERPA guidelines
  • Assist with move in, move out, and hall closing tasks at the beginning, breaks, and end of each semester
  • Participate in on-call duties involving walking the facility, socially interacting with students, and addressing any policy issues, facility issues, or emergencies that arise
  • Perform duties as assigned by RLC that assist in maintaining residence halls and relationships with students. These may include: cleaning, advertising for events, student meetings, on campus errands, and helping with various projects.

Required Qualifications

RAs are expected to be enrolled in a minimum of 12 credit hours and maintain a minimum of 2.5 GPA both cumulatively and per semester. All RAs must be in good standing with Iowa Western Community College’s conduct processes. Job offers contingent upon the results of a background check.

Pay Rate Scholarship that covers an IWCC Residence Life room, and unlimited meal plan for the IWCC Cafeteria. $10.00 per Hour for non-scholarship duties.
