Required Qualifications:
  • BA/BS degree in biomedical discipline or a combination of related education and work experience to equal four years.
  • Excellent written and communication skills
  • Excellent computer and organizational skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • The candidate must have strong problem-solving skills, an ability to multitask and to work independently.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Applicants should have an interest in health sciences and interest in working with human clinical samples.
  • Experience in molecular biology techniques, cell/tissue culture, imaging, or working with human clinical samples.


Summary of Position:
This individual will be responsible for project organization including scheduling meetings, taking minutes, sending group e-mails. Additional responsibilities include organizing data and images from multiple sources and processing human clinical samples for “omics” analysis. Under supervision, the individual will organize project data and sample workflow documentation. The position also involves learning and conducting a variety of techniques in sample preparation, preservation and molecular biology. Continuing self-motivated education in aging research is expected.

Essential and Other Functions:

25% Sample Management:
Clinical sample handling including receipt, preservation, storage and documentation of sample workflow.

50% Project Organization and Data Management:
Schedule meetings, document meeting minutes and send group e-mails. Manage imaging files including image review, sorting, and documentation. Organize information and data from multiple sources.

25% Molecular Biology:
Prepare tissue lysates, isolate RNA, quantitate nucleic acids and perform qRT-PCR and other assays

Summary of Labs Research:
A Research Assistant position is available in the laboratory of Laura Niedernhofer. Our research program is focused on investigating the underlying causes of aging. We will be analyzing human samples using spatialomic, proteomic and genomic applications for developing a senescence atlas of liver and adipose tissue. The candidate will join an exciting research environment in the Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and Biophysics and the Institute on the Biology of Aging and Metabolism at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities. The position offers exceptional training in animal physiology, aging, age-related disease and pre-clinical testing of drugs.
