Job Summary

The Harvard Graduate School of Design’s Frances Loeb Library (FLL) is seeking an innovative, energetic, and team-oriented professional to join its Research & Teaching Team. The Research, Teaching, and Writing Services Librarian will work closely with faculty, students, and staff to grow the library’s offerings surrounding research skills and resources attuned to the growth and evolution of the GSD’s curriculum. We are looking for a skilled leader and coordinator who can create a strategy and structure utilizing the library’s staff and focused on instruction, research assistance, and outreach to the GSD community.

Job-Specific Responsibilities

  • Performs a leadership role in the strategic planning for research support services in Loeb Library. Using knowledge of pedagogical practices, instructional technology, and teaching and research at the GSD, works with GSD faculty and library colleagues to programmatically develop Loeb Library instruction. Plans and implements high-impact methods of teaching (online and in-person, synchronous and asynchronous) that cover a broad array of research skills and issues, including copyright and scholarly communication.
  • Works in conjunction with all Loeb Library team members to continuously improve learning and adoption of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging principles across all facets of the organization in all aspects of the position.
  • Collaborates with, participates in, and coordinates active research support with the additional three Loeb Library teams – Access Services, Collections, and Administration.
  • Oversees the Academic Writing Services program, guiding its pedagogical goals and needs; evaluating the program and exploring ways to streamline and integrate it with other GSD departments.
  • Acts as a liaison to a GSD department or program and as a selector, building collections in a subject area.
  • Provides Canvas (online learning management system) expertise and support, working closely with the Loeb Library’s Head of Instructional Technology. This position will integrate library staff and resources into Canvas course sites and make Canvas a more integral part of the Library’s teaching and research strategy.
  • Coordinates in-person and virtual research support in Loeb Library; develops efficient workflows and the required expertise among staff to provide excellent research services.
  • Develops and leads dynamic training and professional development programs for library staff in research and teaching skills and methods.
  • As part of the larger team of library staff, provides in-depth reference services and research guidance in person and virtually to students, faculty, and the community of outside researchers using all library systems and tools.
  • Serves on Harvard Library and university-wide committees and initiatives and participates in professional development activities.
  • May include recruiting, hiring, and training graduate students to work in the Academic Writing Services program.

Basic Qualifications

  • ALA-accredited library degree (MLS) or its equivalent;
  • Minimum of 2 years' experience in a comparable library setting;
  • Demonstrated research and teaching skills;
  • Experience working with a diverse community and commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion within the curriculum and across the community.
  • Track record in exploration and application of new technological solutions

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Second graduate degree or undergraduate degree in architecture, landscape architecture, urban design or a closely related field;
  • Knowledge of design, engineering, and social science information sources;
  • Demonstrated skill in preparing and conducting library instruction;
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional development, including publishing.
  • Excellent written and oral communication ability;
  • Demonstrated skills in working collegially in a team environment;
  • Flexibility and versatility required in order to effectively contribute to an evolving work
