Job Description
The Neurology Department is seeking Research Specialist II who will use basic understanding of theory behind experiments and applies analytical skills to implement assigned projects, and to identify and trouble-shoot situations needing special attention. This role develops and applies understanding of biological principles underlying pain sensation and neurobiology.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Follows established procedures or protocols and utilizes aseptic technique to quantitatively and accurately perform experiments associated with molecular biology, biochemistry, and cell biology. These may require other associated specialized laboratory methods including tissue culture techniques.
Operates laboratory equipment such as centrifuge, pH meter, analytical balance, scintillation counter, spectrophotometer, light microscope, plate reader, and thermocycler. Maintains and makes minor adjustments to equipment, e.g. calibrating, alignment. Prepares solutions, reagents, and stains following standard laboratory formulas and procedures.
Designs mouse mating schemes and triages mouse offspring for experimental use vs breeding vs euthanasia. Keeps central mouse colonies organized. Maintains mouse satellite colony in compliance with USDA, AALAC and IACUC guidelines. Maintains detailed records of complex mouse colonies.
Following experimental protocols, performs general mouse husbandry (setting up matings, weaning, tissue harvest for genotyping, ear and toe marking), monitors animals and maintains health record. Performs mouse surgeries, conducts mouse behavioral assays to quantify sensory function, injects chemicals, viruses or other agents into mice, sacrifices mice and dissects tissues as required and in accordance with USDA, AALAC and IACUC guidelines and approved protocols.
Prepares tissue for study utilizing histochemical and immunofluorescence techniques. Operates confocal microscope and acquires images in a quantitatively robust manner. Performs quantitative image analysis as dictated by the experiment.
Maintains accurate data records. Keeps the laboratory clean and in working order. Follows injury- and infection-control measures. Monitors inventory levels, orders materials and supplies, files invoices and receipts, counts orders upon receipt and fulfills regulatory recordkeeping in accordance with established policies and procedures.
Operates lab computers for data entry, mouse colony tracking, purchasing. Exercises basic computer skills and learns and applies task-specific software necessary to perform laboratory functions. Contributes to maintenance of computer file structure to keep data organized. Contributes to figure generation for manuscripts and grant proposals.
Communicates and cooperates effectively with the faculty investigators and with other laboratory personnel to facilitate the research efforts of the laboratory and maintain a collegial and collaborative workplace.
Communicates effectively and professionally with vendors, administrative personnel, and other Johns Hopkins colleagues.
Trains students, technicians and other laboratory personnel in laboratory techniques.
Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry, or related field required.
Requires minimum of 2 years of laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.
Work requires basic use of scientific methods, procedures and techniques gained through previous training and experience.
Extensive related post-undergraduate laboratory work experience required.
Additional education may substitute for experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred Qualifications:
Prior experience with complex mouse colony management, tissue collection/histology, and western blotting strongly preferred.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
English language skills (speaking, reading and writing), basic understanding of biology, fundamental mathematics skills, and basic knowledge of Microsoft Office software required.

Physical Requirements:
Must be capable of performing standard laboratory functions throughout the work day and capable of working with live mice in the vivarium and in the lab, including performance of mouse surgeries according to approved protocols.
