The NC State University Libraries invites applications and nominations for the position of Research Librarian for Engineering in the Research Engagement department. Research Engagement (11 librarians, 1 staff) supports and collaborates with faculty members, researchers, and students across the full lifecycle of research and scholarship, offering dynamic services, workshops, spaces, and technologies to enable all forms of research, discovery, and learning. The department collaborates with faculty and students on research skills and techniques; critical information and data literacies; emerging technologies for research; research data management; and measuring research impact. Research Engagement staff build programs and partnerships that enhance teaching and learning, facilitate research productivity and competitiveness, support interdisciplinary collaboration, and catalyze open research, public scholarship, and engagement.
The College of Engineering, the largest college at NC State, fosters educational innovation through 18 bachelor’s, 21 master’s, and 13 doctoral degrees. The College is responsible for over 30 startup companies and is ninth in the nation in research expenditures. It is home to two NSF Engineering Research Centers and is home to 24 research centers, institutes and laboratories. Through the Engineering NC’s Future state legislative initiative established in 2021, the College of Engineering plans to enroll about 4,000 more students in engineering and computer science over the next five years, bringing the student population for the College to around 14,000 and total enrollment at NC State to more than 40,000. “Our state’s technology economy is soaring. So is the need for skilled graduates. As the flagship STEM campus of the UNC System, it falls to NC State to meet that need.”
Essential Job Duties The Research Librarian for Engineering serves as a liaison to select departments in the College of Engineering and other affinity and interdisciplinary programs. Specific departmental or program liaisonship will be based on candidate disciplinary strengths, experience, knowledge, and departmental needs. The position provides instruction on research skills to students in engineering and engages in ongoing development and implementation of innovative and inclusive pedagogical practices. As a part of the Engineering team, composed of members from both the Research Engagement and Collections & Research Strategy departments, they collaboratively plan and deliver innovative, responsive library services to faculty and students.

The Research Librarian for Engineering serves on cross-departmental teams to support interdisciplinary teaching and research initiatives such as information discovery, data literacy, entrepreneurship, open research, research impact, public science, research data management, or data visualization. They collaborate with Collections & Research Strategy librarians and other key library partners in collection development and service assessment activities. They contribute to departmental projects and teams; participate in library planning; and serve on library-wide committees, task forces, and teams.

The position deeply considers how their approach to their daily work reflects and advances the Libraries’ core values of equity, diversity, and inclusion, creating an environment and community that is welcoming for both patrons and colleagues alike. Librarians are expected to be active professionally and to contribute to developments in the field. This position reports to the Lead Librarian for Engineering and Sciences.
This position is based in North Carolina. This position is eligible for flexible hours with a hybrid work environment. This position will require frequent onsite work.

Minimum Education and Experience ALA-accredited MLS, MIS, or equivalent advanced degree

Preferred Qualifications It is not required that candidates meet all of the preferred qualifications to be considered for this position. The following skills represent some of the areas in which this position could potentially grow and focus, based on the incumbent’s background and interests.
  • Educational background in a STEM discipline
  • Experience providing research support and instructional services in STEM disciplines
  • Knowledge of or experience with STEM data analysis tools such as MatLab, Python, or R
  • Knowledge of or experience with tools for collaborative research tools such as GitHub, electronic lab notebooks, data repositories, data sharing tools and repositories
