Job Description SummaryMTRI is seeking an experienced software development professional to lead software design efforts in support of multiple projects for our government and commercial customers. The Research Engineer I – Software Engineer will work with senior engineers and scientists to adapt theoretical ideas in mathematics, physics, engineering, and remote sensing into functioning algorithms. The applicant will be responsible for leading technical teams, assisting junior software developers, and applying software design best practices. The successful candidate will have a strong background in theoretical computer science and be able to define and drive future research directions. The position is based at MTRI in Ann Arbor, MI (www.mtri.org).
Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)
1. Participate as an integral team member on multi-disciplinary research relating to applying technological skills to solving governmental and societal needs.
2. Lead software design efforts for ongoing research programs, including front-end and back-end applications.
3. Lead technical teams of 2-5 software developers.
4. Develop software that adapts theoretical scientific results into algorithms.
5. Assist with defining software objectives by analyzing user requirements, system features, and functionality.
6. Contribute to developing new research thrusts integrating theoretical computer science into current MTRI mathematics, signal processing, and remote sensing programs.
7. Continue to improve performance by being aware of new technologies and software products, participating in educational opportunities, reading professional publications, and participating in professional organizations.
8. Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work.
9. Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives.
9. Supervision will be exercised over student interns on a project-by-project basis.
Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)
Master’s degree in computer science, mathematics, or engineering with computer science experience, and 1 year related experience OR
Bachelor’s degree in computer science, mathematics, or engineering with computer science experience, and 3 years related experience OR
8 years of related experience
Required Experience (minimum requirements)
- Strong programming skills with experience in one or more of the following programming languages/software: C, C++, Python, Java, MATLAB, Julia, or equivalent.
- Experience implementing software design best practices.
- Knowledge of software development tools, including revision control systems.
- Demonstrated organizational ability and attention to detail.
- Demonstrated ability to contribute to multi-disciplinary team projects.
Desirable Education and/or Experience
- Experience leading software development projects.
- Basic knowledge of one or more of the following: signal processing, image processing, machine learning, numerical analysis, statistics, robotics, or distributed computing.
- Experience working with multidisciplinary teams to perform research, solve technical problems, and/or develop software tools.
- Familiarity with Linux or other Unix-based operating system.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements)
- Ability to obtain a U.S. Department of Defense security clearance, which requires United States citizenship with no dual citizenship status.
- Excellent written/oral communication skills.
- Demonstrated organizational ability and attention to detail.

- Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment with respect to significant matters related to job duties.
