Representative, Human Resources -Staff Departments

Cleveland-Cliffs is the largest flat-rolled steel company and the largest iron ore pellet producer in North America. The company is vertically integrated from mining through iron making, steelmaking, rolling, finishing and downstream with hot and cold stamping of steel parts and components.

As an HR Representative of the staff departments, you will perform all HR generalist functions including administering HR policies and procedures, compensation, recruiting/hiring, performance management, workforce planning, career development, employee relations and investigations. The ideal candidate will perform both transactional work and strategic responsibilities working alongside the HR Manager and the client leadership teams to ensure engaged and diverse workforce with equal opportunities. This position will reside at either Indiana Harbor (East Chicago, IN) or in Burns Harbor, IN with options to work out of the Chicago office after training.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide HR generalist support for all matters for assigned staff areas with 400 salaried employees and 100 contractors.
  • Manage the recruiting and hiring process through applicant tracking system utilizing e-recruitment tools and strategy. Source, pre-screen, lead interviews and selection process, make offers and complete all pre-employment and post offer processes.
  • Perform all onboarding and offboarding activities.
  • Responsible for contractor management of approximately 150 contractors hired through 20+ contractor agencies.
  • Oversee the Associates and Intern program for all client departments including onboarding, performance evaluations, satisfaction surveys, employee engagement and data analysis.
  • Track, report and audit the Performance Management Process.
  • Initiate and monitor Performance Improvement Plans.
  • Investigate and resolve employee relations complaints, discrimination, and harassment cases. Write investigation reports and make HR recommended actions.
  • Track recruitment and attrition metrics, analyze findings, and report out to staff area leadership.
  • Manage the medical leave process for assigned staff areas.
  • Develop programs to increase employee satisfaction, motivation, and morale with, measurable results to support higher engagement levels.
  • Support career development for staff employees through training and leadership development.
  • Ensure the accurate maintenance of appropriate records and reports, including those associated with the Affirmative Action Plan and Vets 100 report.
  • First point of contact for 400+ salaried employees.
  • Support HR Manager with special projects as assigned.
  • Travel between local facility locations (approx. 5%)

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or Business-related field
  • A minimum of three years of HR generalist experience
  • Ability to independently manage multiple projects and priorities
  • Excel, PowerPoint, and Word at a minimum of intermediate level
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work with employees at all levels of the organization
  • Strong in the area of change management and problem solving


Preferred Requirements:

  • HR generalist experience in the steel industry or a manufacturing industr.
  • Advance knowledge in recruiting through social media
  • Advanced level in Excel
  • Experience with PowerBI
