This position is located in the Vocational Services Department of Central Rehab Services on MSU/Vernon Campus. If you are looking for a job where you can be creative, this may be it!

The Rehab Therapy Tech I performs entry-level rehabilitation therapy work Monday through Friday 8 to 5, under the general direction of the Rehab Therapy Tech III, to patients in a Forensic Psychiatric setting. Work involves providing rehabilitative services and teaching employability skills to patients with mental impairments utilizing the principles of social learning and the vocational mediums of horticulture, upholstery, and sewing. Works under close supervision, of the Rehab Therapy Tech II, with minimal latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Must be willing to work weekends, on a rotating schedule, to water the greenhouse and monitor heating and cooling systems.

Must understand that duties, location of work, and shift patterns are subject to change as determined by the administration to meet the needs of the hospital. Works under potential hazardous conditions and may receive hazardous duty pay.

Essential Job Functions:
Attends work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.
  • Instructs and oversees individuals or groups of clients in performing therapeutic activities. (45%)

  • Prepares materials for therapeutic activities and maintains an adequate supply of materials. (15%)

  • Prepares reports on clients’ attendance and their responses to treatments. (15%)

  • Oversees the maintenance of therapeutic work areas. (5%)

  • Attends or provides training. (5%)

  • Will assist with weekend or holiday care of plants (watering and monitoring facilities) as assigned to ensure plant quality. (5%)

  • Participates in risk management and safety. (5%)

  • Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency’s obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or locations. (5%)


  • Knowledge Skills Abilities:
    Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of the therapeutic methods and techniques in the rehabilitation therapy area of specialization.

  • Ability to provide rehabilitative therapy and to communicate effectively.

  • Knowledge of Psychiatric Rehab concepts and have ability to present the materials to advance patient learning.

  • Computer knowledge and skill.

  • Ability/willingness to work with supervisor, co-workers and follow established policy and procedures.

  • Considerable knowledge of the methods and techniques of planning and conducting activities for mentally and physically ill patients

  • Must continually present self as a role model to all persons in contact with.

  • Ability to exercise good discretionary judgment in the conduct of duties.

  • Knowledgeable about sewing, upholstery, and horticulture.

  • Registration or Licensure Requirements:
    Valid Texas Driver's License

    Initial Selection Criteria:
    Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent.

    Additional Information:
    Experience teaching or providing therapeutic activities with adults or children preferred.
    Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks including the Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System (CANRS), Nurse Aid, Medication Aide and Employee Misconduct, and HHS OIG list of Excluded Individuals/Entities. Males between the ages of 18-25 must be registered with the Selective Service.

    The salary offered will follow HHS starting salary guidelines which are typically made at or near the posted minimum of the salary range.
