POSITION: Registered Nurse – Pre-admission
LOCATION: Saltzer Ambulatory Surgery Center, Meridian, ID
STATUS: Full-time/ Non-Exempt

The Pre-admission Registered Nurse is responsible for the perioperative screening and planning for patients who are scheduled for surgery. Ensure patient needs are met in accordance with instructions of physician and facility administrative procedures. Participates in various quality activities as appropriate and as directed by the Director of Nursing, Medical Director, and/or the Quality Committee(s).

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Participates as a team member in support of the total peri-operative process.
  • Effectively organizes time, equipment, supplies, and personnel.
  • Assesses and coordinates data submitted by the practitioner’s office
  • Pre-screens for any special health history that may include but not limited to cardiac clearance, history of heart murmurs, history of diabetes, syndromes.
  • Coordinates the process of obtaining missing information such as history and physicals, orders, etc.
  • Develops a strong working relationship with physician offices
  • Initiates and completes pre-op calls with the patient
  • Identifies the high-risk patients and alerts the anesthesiologist of potential risks identified.
  • Organizes the Pre-op call processes which include documentation of a teaching plan for orientation or new employees, education of nursing staff regarding the Pre-op planning process, delegation of pre-op calls to available RN’s.
  • Confirms that proper procedures are used according to accepted Standards of Nursing Practice and organizational policies and procedures.
  • Maintains order and cleanliness of the pre- op and post- op area.
  • Verifies chart has completed history and physical.
  • Verifies chart for appropriate laboratory work and notifies physician (anesthesiologist/attending surgeon) of any abnormal value, and documents in the patient’s medical record.
  • Communicates with anesthesia provider(s), Operating Room personnel, and/or physician(s) about any problems which arise.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Nursing or designee.
  • Promotes positive and effective working relationships among Center staff.
  • Assumes responsibility for patient, physician, and staff satisfaction as it pertains to the clinical areas.
  • Responds appropriately to physician, patient and visitor complaints and communicates this information to the Director of Nursing in a timely manner.

QUALIFICATIONS: (Minimum qualifications required for the job)

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing, Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • High School graduate or GED certificate recipient
  • Previous work experience in a pre-op/post-op within an ambulatory surgery setting, acute hospital surgical department of no less than one (1) year
  • Previous work experience in a post-anesthesia recovery room is preferred

REQUIRED LICENSURE AND CERTIFICATION:

  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Idaho
  • Current BCLS
  • ACLS and PALS certification within 6 months of hire

SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE:

Ability to read and communicate effectively in English. Additional languages preferred. Proficient in the use of computers; ability to multitask, problem solve, meet deadlines, adapt to changing priorities and situations and demonstrate excellent organizational skills.

Knowledge of state-specific and federal healthcare regulations and standards as these pertain to the clinical areas within an Ambulatory Surgery Center.

Strong verbal and written communication skills required. Must be detail oriented and organized. High integrity, including maintenance of confidential information. Must be able to exercise good judgement and positively influence others, including handling confrontations with poise and efficiency.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF POSITION:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and climb or balance. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close distance (e.g., working on a computer for prolonged periods of time).
