Job Description
Sentara Norfolk General Hospital is seeking a Registered Nurse (RN) for Labor & Delivery (L&D) Unit.

The Labor & Delivery Department at Sentara Norfolk General is a high-volume maternity unit dedicated to complicated high-risk deliveries, but also see women who are having problem free childbirth deliveries. Labor and Delivery Unit is comprised of eleven private birthing rooms, three triage rooms, two dedicated operating rooms for our C-section deliveries and three PACUs for after deliver care. Our Registered Nurses are successfully cross trained to work in all these areas.

Sentara Norfolk General Hospital is a teaching facility that shares the medical center with the Jones Institute and Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters. Jones Institute - Eastern Virginia Medical School is just one block from the hospital and it is one of the world's leading centers for infertility treatment work. Resident physicians from the Jones Institute support our Birthing Center. The Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters is down the hallway from our delivery rooms, and this allows convenient access to their neonatal intensive care unit as needed. These affiliations facilitate convenient, accessible, and high-quality care.

This position is 36 hours a week, rotating shift but will be primarily scheduled for days. RN will rotate to the night shift when staffing is needed.

The Registered Nursing (RN) is responsible to perform a competent level of nursing care as demonstrated by the critical thinking model known as the nursing process. The standards of practice (assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, implementation, coordination of care- teaching and health promotion and evaluation) along with the standards of professional performance (ethics, culturally congruent practice, communication, collaboration, leadership, education, evidence- based practice /nursing research, quality, evaluation, resource utilization, and environmental health) encompass the actions and foundation of professional nursing. The RN possesses clinical knowledge and skills to meet standards as required by specific clinical areas.

New Hire Education Requirement: All Registered Nurses who do not have their BSN will be required to sign a BSN Agreement committing to successfully obtain their BSN within 5 years of hire. BSN or MSN preferred. Meets and maintains any requirements defined by specific specialty; Critical Care/IMCU/EP/Advanced Heart Failure Center/SMG Cardiology Practices- ACLS within 1 year of hire; Emergency Care - ACLS & PALS or ENPC within 1 year of hire; de-escalation and physical intervention training within 90 days of hire.For designated Oncology units, Oncology Care ONS/ONCC or Sentara approved course Chemotherapy & Biotherapy Provider Card within 6 months of hire. Women's Care - Perinatal departments; NRP within 6 months of hire. Behavioral Health - De-escalation and physical intervention training within 15 days of hire.Inpatient Pediatrics. PALS within 6 months of hire. All Direct Care RN's required to have BLS within 90 days of hire.
