Our Downtown Public Health team is looking for a Registered Nurse (RN) who will work as part of a multidisciplinary team in a fast-paced Family Health Clinic offering primary care services to low income families (newborn to seniors) with medical complexity and social vulnerability. Our multidisciplinary team includes core public health physicians, ARNPs, Swedish Family Medicine Residents and Preceptors, nurses, medical assistants, behavioral health specialist, nutrition services, interpreters, referral coordinators, administrative staff and insurance enrollment assistance staff.
This RN will coordinate with multiple programs within the facility in order to provide clients with seamless care. The responsibilities include nursing triage, assessments and interventions, patient care planning, evaluation, and medical care coordination, adult and pediatric immunizations, and mental health screening. The RN also carries out prescribed treatments, administers medications, and coordinates activities with other health care staff in order to assure the orderly and safe provision of health care services. The RN facilitates and assures daily clinic activities and operations. The RN maintains the clinic environment, coordinates the patient care team efforts and directs efficient clinic flow. The RN delegates tasks to the health care team within the scope of practice to achieve desirable patient outcomes and efficient clinic functioning.
A day in the life:
- Conducts nursing assessments and interventions, patient care planning, evaluation and medical care coordination.
- Maintains the clinic environment, coordinates the patient care team efforts, delegates tasks and directs clinic flow.
- Carries out prescribed treatments, administers medications and vaccinations, monitors and documents treatment progress and patient response.
- Conducts medical screening and triage with patients over the phone and in person.
- Obtains and documents health history, chief complaint, vital signs, growth monitoring data, assessment data, and developmental screening data.
- Refers to or consults with other health providers.
- Follows established Public Health medical records policies and procedures and the State and Federal laws that govern the release of health care information.
- Establishes relationships with individuals or families to promote interactive problem solving and provide patient education.
- Delegates as allowed under the Nurse Practice Act.
- Participates and assists in the training and orientation of health care professional students and new employees.
- Establishes and maintains tracking of data for acute and chronic illness management.
- Provides for clinic maintenance of supplies and equipment; maintains a safe environment according to standards of (OSHA/WISHA).
- Provides patient care based upon these practice guidelines, community standards of care, and Federal and State laws and regulations.
- Maintains professional competence by pursuing opportunities for continuous learning, attending continuing education offerings, reading professional literature, and engaging in other activities which develop new knowledge and skills.
What you need to know:
- Knowledge of nursing process, ability to use a systematic approach to client care that includes assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention, evaluation, consultation and referral.
- Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, epidemiology, physical assessment and basic pharmacology.
- Knowledge of health care systems structure and function, (primary care services, community resources and private providers), allowing for appropriate client referrals based upon patient need and program guidelines.
- Knowledge of human systems (wellness, illness, growth and development, human behavior, psychosocial development, family and community systems) and alternative health care treatments.
- Knowledge of prescribed treatments and medical interventions, ability to monitor and document patient's treatment progress and response, refer to providers when indicated.
- Knowledge of Washington State law (WAC 18.79) relating to nursing care, federal health care regulations, Nurse Practice guidelines, Patient Bill of Rights, clinical practice guidelines for patient care, and understands community standards.
- Knowledge of chart documentation requirements, medical record forms, State and Federal laws that govern release of health care information, patient consent.
- Requires electronic charting in EPIC. Knowledge of health care technology, equipment, supplies and materials needed for medical treatment.
- Familiarity with the systems required to maintain the supplies; skill in repairing and calibrating clinic equipment.
- Knowledge of adult learning and health education techniques and principles including reproductive health education, related services information, options counseling, and emergency contraception services.
- Ability to effectively manage time, problem solve, manage multiple tasks, prioritize, intervene in a crisis and coordinate medical care.
- Ability to lead the work of others, including to delegate tasks and coordinate the patient care team effort to provide efficient clinic flow.
- Knowledge of research techniques and principals as well as quality assurance/improvement systems.
- Ability to apply OSHA/WISHA standards.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Ability to use information management systems.
- Ability to initiate appropriate crisis intervention and emergency response.
- Ability to maintain working relationships and ability to work with diverse populations and cultures; ability to engage clients in a care plan.
- Ability to conduct patient triage, both in person and on the phone.
- Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to improve patient outcomes.
Must haves:
- Current Washington State Registered Nurse license in good standing
- Current BLS for Healthcare Provider Certification
- Associate preparation from an accredited School of Nursing
- Washington State driver's license or ability to travel to other sites within Seattle-King County
- Attached a letter of interest describing why you would like to work with the community
It would be great if:
- You were bilingual and/or bicultural, especially Spanish
- Had at least 2 years Ambulatory Care nursing experience under your belt
- You had a Bachelor of Nursing
- You have experience working with multiple age groups, working with diverse immigrant, refugee populations and/or high risk populations impacted by substance use, mental illness, and homelessness
- Experience with EPIC

Work Location and Schedule: This position is a 1.0 FTE, Term-Limited Temporary that is expected to end June 2022 and is overtime eligible. The primary worksite for this position is at the Downtown Public Health Center which is located at 2124 Fourth Avenue Seattle, WA 98121. As needed, the position may be deployed to other Public Health Centers and sites throughout King County.
This position will work Monday to Friday 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. However, here at Public Health Seattle-King County we strive to be accessible to those we serve. This position may require flexibility to accommodate different work schedules.
