The City of Garden City is accepting applications for a Driver for the Recycling & Solid Waste Department! The Driver is responsible for work activities in recycling which includes, but is not limited to operating recycling equipment, driving a packer truck on recycling routes, and maintaining all recycling drop-off sites.

Examples of Duties

  • Driver for recycling routes.
  • Collects and transports materials to Recycle Center.
  • Bales and loads materials for shipment according to recycling standards and fills out the proper paperwork.
  • Follows Federal and State safety rules and procedures at all times.
  • Backup driver for Solid Waste routes.
  • Operates packer trucks; including but not limited to pickups, trucks, balers, glass crushers, and skid loaders with forklifts and grapples.
  • Handles containers weighing 100 to 350 lbs.
  • Handles baled recyclables weighing up to 2000 lbs.
  • Maintains equipment, vehicles, tools, supplies, facilities and grounds.
  • Applies chemicals related to the department, using proper safety procedures.
  • Required - Kansas CDL Driver’s License.
  • Subject to the Department's Random Drug/Alcohol testing program.
  • May act as a workshop leader at the discretion of the Foreman.
  • Performs any other duties as assigned as long as it is non-certified.

Typical Qualifications

High school diploma or GED. One (1) year experience in driving and operating heavy equipment. Valid Kansas Class B CDL Driver's License required. Applicant must make available drug testing history and pass drug test.

Skills in driving and operating refuse vehicles. Knowledge of occupational hazards, and safety practices and procedures. Ability to understand verbal and written instructions. Ability to perform physical labor under varying weather conditions. Ability to communicate with City employees and the general public.
