Mercy LIFE (Living Independently for Elders, a PACE Program) Valley View is seeking a Recreation Assistant to join our team.

The primary purpose of this position is to assist with planning, implementation, and evaluation of therapeutic recreational activities for all participants, in accordance with the participant's assessment and care plan. The Recreation Assistant will proactively identify, develop and execute solutions to enhance the participant experience.

This position will work onsite Mon - Fri 8 am until 430 pm with some flexibility in schedule possible.

Mercy Life Valley View provides both housing and the Mercy LIFE program for senior adults. This program provides services to a community specifically comprised of deaf seniors.

Candidates must be willing to learn American Sign Language (ASL). Interpreters and/or other tools will be provided while training.

Seniors who qualify for nursing home care alternatively have the option to receive comprehensive care from an interdisciplinary team of experts, all focused on improving participants’ health. At our centers, seniors receive clinical and rehabilitation therapy and build relationships with doctors, nurses and fellow participants – all under one roof.

General Responsibilities:

Plan and implement activities for dementia-specific population. Activities may focus on small groups, one-on-one programming and sensory stimulation.

Plan and implement group and individual activities to improve or maintain the participants' cognitive, physical, social, psychosocial, and artistic needs.

Assist participants to improve their daily life by promoting socialization, expanding personnel interests, increasing physical activity and continue lifelong learning.

Develop and maintain a good working rapport with other departments within the program to assure that daily activities program can be performed without interruptions.

Assist in developing a written plan of care for each participant's activities program that identifies the strengths/needs of the participants and the goals to be accomplished for each opportunity identified.

Assist in development of a monthly calendar of activities.

Assist in providing recreational education and training to support other PACE Center staff members, as appropriate.

Develop and implement a quarterly newsletter for participants and caregivers informing them of events and on goings of the PACE Organization.

Monitor recreation therapy supplies and equipment inventory as needed to ensure adequate supplies.

Minimum qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Minimum one (1) year of experience working with frail or elderly population required
  • Must be action-oriented, have business acumen, manage conflict well, be customer focused, have high decision quality, flexibility to adapt to ongoing change and have organizational agility.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and exercise independent judgment.
  • Demonstrates superior written, verbal and/or American Sign Language (ASL) communication and presentation skills appropriate for audience comprehension.
  • Well-developed communication skills, written, oral or through ASL, that may be used either in an on-site or virtual environment is required.
  • Able to communicate effectively with individuals and groups representing diverse perspectives.
  • Position may require 10% travel within the Centers geographic region.
  • Willingness to learn ASL required (interpreter provided)
  • American Sign Language (ASL) proficiency preferred
  • Education or training in geriatrics, including dementia preferred.
