Summary


Under general supervision and according to established policies and procedures, performs ASTM tests on concrete and raw materials to ensure the quality of product and conformance to specifications. Assists customers with questions regarding concrete performance, mix designs, specifications, etc.

Works under general supervision with specified policies, procedures and performance goals. Refers any unusual problems or issues to the Technical Services Manager for guidance.


Primary Duties & Responsibilities


  • Performs required ASTM tests on plastic concrete, which involves seven tests on each sample submitted by the batch plants, including slump, air, yield, temperature, moisture and related analyses. Directs batchmen in performing this same testing on a scheduled basis.
  • Provides quality customer service by answering questions and complaints in a timely and professional manner. Maintains favorable customer relations.
  • Obtains and sieves rock and sand samples on a specified regular basis to ensure quality standards and specifications are met.
  • Obtains and delivers test cylinders from batch plants or job sites to Ash Grove Cement's research lab as needed.
  • Works toward ensuring compliance with ASTM specifications and ACI standards.
  • Maintains lab equipment in good operational and properly calibrated condition.
  • Completes required paperwork and reports regarding test results and projects as assigned.
  • Performs job responsibilities in compliance with safety regulations.
  • Conducts slump school training for drivers when needed.
  • Performs special projects as assigned.
  • Observes all safety rules and keeps work areas and equipment clean and orderly.
  • Works with batchmen to coordinate production of concrete.

Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills & Abilities


  • Two years’ experience preferred with concrete quality control testing and mix design experience.
  • ACI certification for Concrete Field Testing Technician preferred.
  • Knowledge of and ability to accurately perform various tests on plastic concrete and aggregate such as slump, air, yield, temperature, moisture, sieve, strength, etc. Knowledge of and ability to comply with ASTM specifications and ACI standards. Skill and ability to calibrate equipment properly and accurately are essential. Additional skills needed include analytical, decision-making, problem-solving, and verbal and written communication skills. Ability to use a personal computer to record data and generate reports.
  • Work requires the ability to lift heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds.


Required Education


  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Some college preferred.

Job hazards include frequent exposure to chemicals, dust, dirt, noise, and all weather conditions.
