Under the general supervision of the Public Safety Supervisor, the Public Safety Officer will work to maintain a secure and safe environment for faculty, staff, patients, visitors and property. Duties will include communication functions of the Public Safety Department, rotation and receipt of all emergency and non-emergency incoming calls to the dispatch center, solicits descriptive information to determine the nature and urgency of the request and the location and scope of the incident.

Essential Job Functions

  • Supervises the work of the public safety coordinators by assigning work, observing and reviewing performance (both through the performance review process and through counseling as required).
  • Recommends discipline of Public Safety Coordinators through the chain of command, participates in hiring Public Safety Coordinators; assigns work to Public Safety Coordinators, including overtime as necessary.
  • Evaluates Public Safety Coordinators, including evaluation of the quality and quantity of their work performance and scheduling of daily assignments.
  • Performs the communications dispatch function for UC Medicine Public Safety.
  • Monitors the closed circuit television cameras.
  • Assigns Incident Report numbers to Public Safety personnel from Continuum Incident Report System.
  • Monitors UCM Public Safety and University Police radio traffic and communicates with UCPD dispatch during any emergencies or incidents within the Med-Center that requires UCPD assistance.
  • Monitor the UC Medicine alarm systems and Submits reports when required.
  • Directs and coordinate the Public Safety response to calls for service and alarms.
  • Maintain radio contract with Public Safety personnel to insure their safety.

Public Safety Officer (PSO) Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • At least 21 years of age
  • Three to five years of experience in security or law enforcement required
  • Ability to complete IAHSS Certification Training Program within 90 days of employment
  • Permanent Employee Registration Card (PERC), as defined in the Private Detective,
  • Valid Driver's License

Completion of the following Training/Certifications provided by UCM within the first 180 days of employment:

  • Illinois 20-Hour Unarmed Security Officer Certificate
  • Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) Verbal Intervention Training/Certification
  • International Association of Health Safety and Security (IAHSS) Basic Certification
  • International Association of Health Safety and Security (IAHSS) Advanced Certification
  • CPR/AED Certification
  • Defensive Tactics
  • Handcuffing Certification
  • Use of Restraints

Preferred Qualifications
  • College preferred
  • At least one year in health care

Position Details
  • Job Type/FTE: Full-time (1.0) ; 8-hour shifts

In this role, we anticipate that you will generally work approximately 40 hours per week. We anticipate that you will generally be scheduled to work 8hr shift, from approximately 3pm-11pm and will not be scheduled for on-call shifts.
