Job Description
Scope of Work

Primarily responsible for answering telephone calls from citizens. Routes calls for service for law enforcement, fire suppression and ambulance services.


Essential Job Duties

Essential Job DutiesAnswers the phone and assists citizens with requests for emergency and non-emergency service for police, fire, sheriff and emergency medical service.
Directs citizen Inquiries and non-emergency calls to the appropriate agency or organization.
  • Requests and disseminates information via the telephone.
  • Obtains computer Information and disseminates to law enforcement officials and investigators.
  • Enters related Information into the system.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Must be able to communicate clearly under what, at times, could be highly complex and stressful situations. Ability to learn and discern visual images that are on small liquid crystal displays and discern between multi-colored lights.

Required Qualifications

Ability to work with communications equipment and communicate with citizens and emergency personnel in highly stressful, possibly emergency situations. Employee communicates with other employees in the work group, citizens and other public safety agencies to discuss requests for service and possible criminal activities.

Ability to read and understand technical and professional manuals to record work activities, keep records or work with computers. Skill in the operation and maintenance of several office machines and equipment such as specialized computers and related information systems. Employees work rotating shifts and gather, organize, translate and process information from various emergency callers.
Must be able to work evening and overnight shifts.

High school diploma or equivalent preferred with one to three years of experience in a clerical position, preferably with experience in data entry and general personal computing and telephone skills. Must be able to pass a typing test with 35 wpm and a Perfex test.

Optional DentalEmployees and their dependents enrolled in a City medical plan are eligible to enroll in the optional dental coverage. Optional Vision Employees and their dependents enrolled in a City medical plan are eligible to enroll in optional vision coverage. RetirementSworn Fire Department employees are enrolled in retirement through the Midland Firemen’s Relief and Retirement Fund (FRRF). Deferred Compensation 457(b)Additional retirement accounts are available in the form of deferred compensation through payroll deduction on a pre-tax basis. Employees can choose from three (3) companies to participate in deferred compensation. Enrollment is optional. Healthcare Reimbursement Account (HRA)The HRA is an employer-funded account available to eligible employees enrolled in the City’s medical plan. The amount the City contributes into each account depends on the benefit option an employee selects. This account can be used toward any un-reimbursed medical expenses such as copays, deductibles and prescriptions. Flex Spending Accounts (FSA)The FSA is an employee-funded account that allows employees to set aside additional money for health-care and dependent care expenses. This money is payroll deducted on a pre-tax basis. Enrollment is optional. Group Term Life InsuranceAll full-time employees are eligible to receive $50,000 in basic life coverage at no cost.
