BEHAVIORAL MEDICINE FACULTY MEMBER / CLINICAL HEALTH PSYCHOLOGIST
Wellstar’s leaders of the Behavioral Health Service Line and Graduate Medical Education (GME) Family Medicine Residency Program are pleased to announce an opening for a full-time Behavioral Medicine faculty member. This position is responsible for administering and maintaining an educational environment conducive to educating Family Medicine residents in the ACGME competency area of behavioral health. Behavioral science coursework is provided during all three years of residency training, representing a critical didactic pillar.
Setting: Wellstar Health System is a not-for-profit 11-hospital system, recognized as the 5th most integrated health system in the United States, and is the largest health system in Georgia. Wellstar Health System is a member of the Mayo Clinic Network. For this position, services will be provided on-site in the Family Medicine Residency clinic, located in Smyrna, Georgia. Residents also complete hospital rotations at the Kennestone Regional Medical Center (KRMC). Serving the northern Atlanta suburbs, the KRMC is Wellstar’s flagship hospital, a 650+ bed Level II trauma and tertiary hospital providing graduate medical education in other medical specialties. This position is a collaboration between Wellstar’s Behavioral Health Service Line and GME Family Medicine leadership. Operational support for this position will originate within the Medical Group’s Psychological Services practice, with a direct reporting line to Wellstar’s Chief Behavioral Health Officer, or his/her designee. The position also possesses a strong dotted line to the Program Director of the Family Medicine GME program.
Duties/Responsibilities: The candidate we are seeking will need a diverse skill set, with day-to-day responsibilities that include the following: Educational & Administrative Duties
  • Rotating with faculty members to provide didactic seminars during weekly Grand Rounds
  • Providing longitudinal clinical input for residents on behavioral health issues
  • Facilitating the Behavioral Medicine elective rotation
  • Participating in the interview, selection, and ranking process of residency candidates
  • Serving as a member of the Clinical Competency Committee (CCC) and the Program Evaluation Committee (PEC)
  • Attending and participating in faculty-related activities, including monthly faculty meetings, monthly team meetings, and quarterly faculty development meetings
  • Coordinating/facilitating the resident retreat
  • Attending daily clinical huddles
  • Assisting with research, publications, posters, and conference presentations
  • Completing and submitting evaluations of residents in a timely manner
Teaching, Evaluating, and Serving as a Preceptor for Residents
  • Completing video reviews of patient sessions with residents and/or their advisors/PD
  • Providing regular assessments to residents during precepting sessions, and assisting with patients who have a behavioral health complaint and/or psychiatric diagnosis
  • Facilitating/supervising home visits with a standardized format given to residents and evaluating a formal presentation after the home visit
Balint Groups
  • Facilitating/leading a monthly Balint group
Collaboration with Behavioral Health
  • Building relationships with behavioral health leadership and clinicians
  • Serving on the Behavioral Health Service Line cabinet (or other committees as needed)
  • Aligning quality/value metrics with the Behavioral Health and Family Medicine departments
  • Participating in the monthly Clinical Health Psychology forum

Skills Needed: The ideal candidate will possess knowledge and understanding of the requirements for enduring accreditation as an ACGME-accredited Family Medicine Program. He/She should possess a strong grasp of didactic models and understand how to apply these frameworks effectively with medical residents, and through the use of cross-cultural methods. The ability to provide direct, empathic, and process-related feedback effectively to residents is imperative in order to optimize their learning. The candidate should possess a strong grasp of behavioral medicine and health psychology, with the ability to demonstrate the complex relationships between the biological, psychological, and social aspects of health. He/She should be a competent diagnostician and possess expertise in the application of evidence-based psychological treatments, such as Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT). The ability to demonstrate how methods such as motivational interviewing can catalyze short-term and sustained behavioral changes will help residents deliver optimal outcomes to their patients. Being well-versed in the development of research protocols, IRB processes, and serving as a research consultant/advisor to residents will further add to the residency experience. Lastly, the candidate should possess strong interpersonal skills that allow him/her to develop trust quickly and support the various needs of medical residents, which includes the development and maintenance of work-life balance.
Qualifications
Required Minimum Education: (1) a doctorate degree (Ph.D./Psy.D.) in clinical or counseling psychology from a program accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA), (2) completion of an APA-accredited internship in a hospital/medical setting. (3) focused training in Clinical Health Psychology with focused rotations in integrated primary care psychology during internship/residency; (4) at least two years of experience teaching residents and/or behavioral medicine, and (5) licensure or license-eligibility in the State of Georgia. Board-certification in Clinical Health Psychology (ABCHP) is preferred but not required at the time of hire. For those individuals without board-certification, the provider should obtain board certification within 24 months of the date of hire.
