Job Description
Provides electrical engineering analysis and technical support for the planning and operation of the electric power system. Implements appropriate system modeling, develops tools and procedures to monitor and control the system
Performs system studies, analyzes simulated or actual operating results, develops solutions to current or future system issues, and appropriately reports findings and recommendations.
JOB DUTIES
- Analyzes transmission network data including Transmission and Generation element parameters.
- Works closely with ERCOT System Operations, System Operations Support, Market Operating Services Support, Client Services, System Planning and Metering.
- Works with EMS and Transmission Planning power flow, Locational Marginal Pricing (LMP), and other analysis software to provide accurate power system models and associated cases.
- Supports detailed model changes delivered by Network Operations Model Change Requests (NOMCRs) to maintain an accurate Network Operations Model, and other models contained within the ERCOT modeling system.
- Coordinates and works with the NDSWG (Network Data Support Working Group) members on data exchange and transmission network model maintenance via the NOMCR process.
- Creates and utilizes data mining mechanisms and techniques for Protocol and Guide compliance driven reports and to validate the accuracy of the model.
- Reviews, drafts, and implements improvements to the modeling process and implements new technologies to the model.
- Provides training and evaluation of members of the Engineering Development Program (EDP).
- Manage updates and upgrades of the SGEM application to specify and implement desired new functionality.
- Reviews Contingencies, Special Protection Systems, Remedial Action Plans, Mitigation Action Plans, Outages, and other issues that possibly affect models.
- Reviews, drafts, and presents changes to the Protocols, Guides, procedures, training material for Engineer Development Program (EDP) and Market Participants (MPs), and other supporting ERCOT documents associated to modeling.
- Understands and applies principles, theories and concepts related to the profession and ERCOT's culture.
- Exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action.
- Impact is generally limited to specific assignments or projects.
- May respond to inquiries and/or provide assistance and/or guidance to lower level workers.
Qualifications
Level 1
- Works under the direction of a senior level engineer or supervisor/manager to complete departmental goals and assignments
- Performs all work according to applicable rules and regulations including regulatory requirements and organization policies and procedures
- Learns how to use and develop software tools that enhance system reliability and departmental/organizational efficiencies
- Under direct supervision, participates in teams to obtain input, address comments and perform studies
Level 2 - Above +
- May provide on the job training or help oversee the work of other engineers/analysts
- May act as mentor and advisor to less experienced engineers/analysts
- Typically works independently on assignments and projects
- Participates in multi-functional teams to obtain input, address comments and perform studies
- Assists in developing tools, processes and procedures that enhance system reliability and departmental/organizational efficiencies
- Participates with other ERCOT departments to select and implement system changes as needed
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field, or a combination of education and experience that provides the applicant with knowledge equivalent to a major in such fields. Power Systems coursework.
Work Experience
For All Levels -
- Effective communicator and the ability to coordinate with other team members
- Familiarity in power systems analysis and modeling.
- Familiarity in database querying (SQL)
- Detail oriented and organized.
Engineer 2
- Minimum 1 to 2 years (in excess of degree requirements stated above) of progressively responsible experience as a power system engineer or similar type role.
- Have some programming experience (python, VBA and SQL exp. preferred)
- Experience within the electric utility industry preferred.
Engineer 3
- Minimum 3 years experience as a power system engineer or similar type role
- Have some programming experience (python, VBA and SQL exp. preferred)
- Experience within the electric utility industry preferred
Certifications & Licenses
- Professional Engineer registration in Texas preferred.
This position will be physically located in Taylor, TX, just northeast of Austin. It is open to a Level 1, 2 or 3, depending on the experience of the candidate identified.
Physical Work Location: Taylor, TX. ERCOT employees are working remote temporarily, due to COVID-19. Relocation will still be required if located out of state.
