Job Description

RESPONSIBILITIES & EXPECTATIONS:

Leadership for safety and environmental for production operations and quality lab:

  • Ensure a safe workplace and regulatory compliance with Federal (MSHA), State, local, and Company policies.
  • Drive team member’s environmental performance and ensure all permit/regulatory requirements are met.
  • Support Environmental Health and Safety initiatives and awareness programs.
  • Be a leader and promoter of a safety culture.
  • Ensure employees have a clear understanding of expected safety performance and the required training.
  • Ensure proper training programs are implemented for new employees.
  • Actively participate in audits for regulatory, safety and environmental compliance at the site.
  • Developing and setting targets for key process parameters.
  • Monitor Kiln performance to hit production, quality, efficiency, and environmental targets.
  • Develop Tasks and material lists for kiln equipment for maintenance and outages.
  • Interface with Production Manager on the performance of kiln crews, always seeking to develop the production crew.
  • Work with the lab and production manager in optimizing stone blends and sizing.
  • Manage the day-to-day production activities of the plant by providing direction and leadership to assigned work group.

Manage production teams to maintain and improve plant operations:

  • Ensures production schedules are maintained to satisfy production and shipping commitments, thus minimize inventory related shortages.
  • Establishes and enforces departmental operational procedures to maximize efficiency, quality, and environmental compliance.
  • Continually drive process improvement opportunities.
  • Optimization of production capacity and asset utilization.
  • Integrate Plant initiatives and goals at the Production level.
  • Maintain adequate stockpile inventories
  • Maintain production records and required documents.
  • Should be able to effectively communicate with customers on product inquiries, service and complaints
  • Interact with Sales Manager on a daily basis to improve our customer’s experience of buying product from Lhoist, Natividad
  • Effectively monitor and control overtime and other costs in various departments
  • Oversee Shipping Department

Lab management and quality control oversight:

  • Oversee daily testing requirements.
  • Oversee sample and measure chemical and physical properties on all types of raw and finished products, environmental systems, and fuels following established laboratory guidelines.
  • Report quality non-conformances to the General Manager.
  • Effectively document, interpret and communicate analysis results within the context of the production facilities to maintain product quality.
  • Assist with tasks in other departments as needed.
  • Oversee Lead investigations on customer complaints to find root causes. Document findings
  • Interact directly with customers as needed
  • Lead and sustain the Safe Feed Safe Food program initiative for the plant
  • Conduct quality audits in the various departments to ensure consistently high quality of various products
  • Coordinate, lead and sustain any regional and corporate quality initiatives
  • Identify and lead quality improvement initiatives
  • Implement and sustain 5S in the lab
  • Effectively communicate quality findings with hourly workforce
  • Coach lab tech on quality matters as needed

Managing and Leading Staff:

  • Direct and monitor the production team members. This includes adjusting staff levels, revising performance standards, employee selection/hiring, utilizing progressive discipline, employee development, etc.
  • Implement processes to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the production department.
  • Be a positive leader that encourages cross-functional communications.
  • Communicate mining performance highlights to plant managers, regional directors, and corporate as requested.
  • Be able to excel in a multi-union environment

Safe Quality Food (SQF):

  • Ensure a SQF workplace and in regulatory compliance with Federal FDA – Food Modernization Safety Act (CFR Code of Federal Regulations Title 21, , Part 507)
  • Support Environmental Health and Safety, as well as SQF initiatives and awareness programs.
  • Be a leader and promoter of employee safety and SQF culture.
  • Ensure employees have a clear understanding of expected safety and SQF performance and the required training.
  • Ensure proper training programs are implemented for new employees and continued for existing employees.
  • Actively participate in audits for regulatory, safety, SQF and environmental compliance at the site.

ATTRIBUTES:

  • Five years of experience in mining industry (preferable in lime).
  • Strong Compliance and safety orientation.
  • Knowledgeable of manufacturing processes in a related mineral industry.
  • Basic understanding of Statistical Process Control (SPC)
  • Strong quality and ISO 9001 conscience.
  • Effective planning and organizational skills.
  • Self-motivated and must be able to work independently.
  • Effective leadership and problem-solving skills, including experience managing direct reports.
  • Ability and willingness to create a strong sense of teamwork, drive for results/improvement and organization cohesiveness.
  • Good communication skills-both written and verbal.
  • Demonstrated skills entering and retrieving data in a Microsoft based computer system.
  • Very thorough understanding of Preheater Kilns in Lime Processing.
  • Deep understanding of process control. Able to work with Electricians and Process Engineers on a professional level to attain optimal system design, operation and maintenance.
  • Thorough understanding of fuels and combustion process and environmental constraints.
  • Understanding of Lime Chemistry and process drivers of quality.
  • Strong team member and prior experience in a union environment preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Must be physically able to perform work assigned.
  • Must be physically capable of accessing all plant locations.
  • Access all areas within a site which could include heights of 150 feet, confined spaces, climbing ladders or stairs, and accessing tunnels.
  • Will be working at times in covered environment but mainly in a lime/mineral environment.
  • The employee will be exposed to the following working conditions: Extreme Heat and Cold, Noise, Vibration, Oils, and Atmospheric Conditions such as Dust, Fumes, and Lime/Mineral Particles.
  • The employee will be required to perform the following actions (from time to time): Standing, walking, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, talking, seeing, hearing and sitting.
  • Ability to lift/carry 50 pounds.

REQUIRED EDUCATION:

  • Bachelors’ degree in process engineering, or equivalent combination of relevant experience and education.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

  • A minimum five years of experience in production environment with preferred emphasis in kilns.
