Air Products and Chemicals, Inc., a Fortune 500 manufacturer of industrial gases, has an immediate opening for a Process Controls / Automation / Instrumentation Engineer to join our Standard Plants Product Line(SPPL) team at our Corporate Headquarters in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

The SPPL Process Controls team provides engineering and startup support for our line of productized Cryogenic Air Separation Plants, Electrolysis Plants, CO2 Liquefaction Plants, Adsorption Separation Plants, and Steam Methane Reforming Plants. Our business supports customers in a diverse range of industries including metals processing, glass manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, foods processing, electronics manufacturing, and chemical and petrochemical manufacturing to name a few.

You will execute projects in all regions of the globe. As a result, we ask that you be willing to travel both domestically and globally to support panel and equipment check-outs as well as plant start-up activities as needed. Travel duration often varies from one to six weeks, depending on project complexity. Travel requirements are typically 25% or less per year with an effort to maintain a healthy work life balance.

As a Controls Engineer you will:
  • Develop new product offerings including Hydrogen PSAs, CO2 VSAs, and Electrolysis Plants
  • Assist in updating and maintaining current product portfolio including Cryogenic Nitrogen Generators, Small Hydrogen Generators, Nitrogen PSAs, and Oxygen VSAs
  • Develop and Maintain Product-specific Process Controls execution plans for new and existing products
  • Author process controls documents for use in Projects and Products including Instrument Specifications, Alarm and Trip summaries, Inspection & Test Procedures
  • Participate in P&ID development and in Hazard and Operability Reviews
  • Specify and Program Process automation hardware including PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, Single Loop Controllers, Trip Amplifiers, Transmitters, Valves, and Analyzers
  • Review Controls schematics and related documents and provide recommendations to our I&E design team
  • Share creative solutions and prepare Process Controls estimates for project and product development efforts and identify process controls technical risk items
  • Provide on-site commissioning/startup support and remote troubleshooting
  • Have good problem-solving abilities, be ambitious, with excellent interpersonal and communication skills enabling you to work well within a multi-disciplinary design team located in multiple geographies and to liaise directly with suppliers and clients
  • Participate in Factory Acceptance Testing of Process Automation equipment (PLC cabinets, analyzer panels, Remote I/O cabinets)
Desired skills, experience, and attributes:
  • A bachelor’s degree in Chemical, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering, or equivalent work experience
  • More than 7 years of related work experience with process automation, instrumentation, analytical equipment, and controls
  • Product based approach to design
  • Prior commissioning, field support, and/or equipment checkout experience.
  • Familiarity with Siemens TIA Portal and Allen-Bradley RSLogix5000 is preferred while other PLC platforms are a plus
  • Instrument specification experience in SPI (Smart Plant Instrumentation) is a plus
  • Capability to read and understand control schematics and P&IDs
  • Personal accountability as well as a willingness to ask for help when needed is important
  • Ability to prioritize project commitments while executing multiple projects and other activities
  • Able to demonstrate a deep understanding of the design and implementation of control and instrumentation systems for process plants
