Job Description
The Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice is committed to the success of its transformation plan to bring a balanced approach of comprehensive services that prevent and reduce juvenile delinquency through partnerships with families, schools, communities, law enforcement, and other agencies. This plan will provide an opportunity for delinquent youth to develop into responsible and productive citizens. DJJ is currently recruiting for a Probation Officer position in the 20th District Court Service Unit to continue the work of this plan in support of the agency’s mission.
The purpose of this position is to provide domestic and delinquent intake practices and services, juvenile probation, and parole services to the Counties of Loudoun, Fauquier, and Rappahannock. Headquartered in the Loudoun County Courthouse in Leesburg, Virginia, the 20th District CSU also has branch offices in Ashburn, Warrenton, and Washington, Virginia. This position will report out of the Warrenton branch office. This position will provide supervision to youth offenders and enforce the orders of the court to protect the public and reduce delinquency while utilizing community resources to develop valuable citizens. The selected incumbent will be expected to contribute to the protection of the community and reduce low risk offenders from entering the system by executing diversions, assisting parents in managing delinquent behaviors, and collaborating with the schools and community stakeholders to provide for development of the juveniles’ social, emotional and educational needs. The selected incumbent is expected to ensure the protection of the Commonwealth by assisting the community in providing written reports with recommendations made within the structured matrix, and supervision that protects the citizens, develops competency in the youths and holds them accountable.

Minimum QualificationsThe incumbent must have basic knowledge of the principles of psychology, sociology, criminal justice practices and counseling. Working knowledge with mal-adjusted juveniles and their families. Demonstrated experience interacting and communicating well with people from all socio-economic groups, races, creeds and religions. Demonstrated experience in assessing, interviewing, and counseling maladaptive and or/ high-risk juveniles and their families. Working experience in assessing needs, risk, and services to youth and families to make the most appropriate interventions using evidenced-based practices. Experience conveying ideas, opinions and facts verbally and in writing. Comprehensive knowledge of deescalating hostile situations in a professional manner and model appropriate behavior. Experience working collaboratively with all community agencies and partners to perform daily job responsibilities. Demonstrated experience in interpreting policy, regulations, guidelines and Code of Virginia. Experience utilizing a personal computer including experience using Microsoft Office Suite is required. A valid Virginia driver’s license is required by the date of employment.
This position is designated essential to the mission of the 20th District Court Service Unit and you may be required to perform your duties during times of inclement weather or other times that the executive branch of state government is closed. Your duties may be changed or modified based on the needs of the 20th District Court Service Unit at the discretion of the Director.
Preferred QualificationsBachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university preferably in the fields of criminal justice, social work, sociology, psychology or a related field. Demonstrated experience in assessing, interviewing, and counseling maladaptive and or/ high-risk juveniles and their families in a court, social service, or mental health agency setting. Experience in motivational interviewing techniques. Case management experience is strongly preferred. Spanish speaking proficiency is preferred.
