Job Description
Appearance, Health, and Safety Behavior - Adhere to departmental and governmental safety standards and organizational and departmental personal appearance policies. Equipment Maintenance - Repair and maintain powerhouse equipment to minimize interruptions of utilities to the hospital. Maintain proper water quality for boiler water, condensate, water softeners, and cooling towers to ensure that water is within proper limits to prevent damage to power plant equipment. Maintain the power plant building and all equipment in prime condition which promotes a clean and safe work environment that prevents personal injury and equipment damage. Operate a wide variety of power plant equipment to include boilers, chilled water air conditioning equipment, pumps, air compressors, and diesel-electric generators for the provision of utilities necessary for hospital operations. Assumes full responsibility for plant operations during evening and weekend/holiday shifts.

Job Responsibilities
  • Wear appropriate safety equipment and comply with departmental and OSHA safety standards at all times.
  • Keep personal workspaces and equipment in a safe and orderly condition to ensure personal safety, prevent injury, and checks safety equipment to ensure availability and good condition as assigned by the plant supervisor.
  • Follow hospital infection control/universal precautions at all times.
  • Maintain a clean, neat, hygienic, well-groomed, and professional personal appearance per departmental and hospital policies at all times.
  • Maintain all power plant equipment following issued Preventive Maintenance Orders and manufacturer's recommended procedures.
  • Complete and return all work orders/PM orders to the power plant supervisor upon completion of the task ensuring that the work is accomplished on or before the procedure due date.
  • Repair power plant equipment under directives and guidance from the power plant supervisor. Complete documentation of repair work on power plant equipment and submit to the power plant supervisor upon completion of the repair.
  • Interprets plant and energy management system readings to determine if the equipment is operating properly and anticipates potential problems with equipment and systems, evidenced by plant logs and EMS printouts.
  • Sample, test and treat water softener and boiler feed water with appropriate chemicals to preclude excessive scaling of the boiler tubes IAW policies/procedures.
  • Sample, test and treat cooling tower water to preclude waterborne disease organisms an environment to grow IAW policies/procedures.
  • Changes and disposes of empty chemical barrels as needed.
  • Insures chemical testing and storage area are clean and chemicals properly stored.
  • Maintain necessary logs of water analyses and chemical additives following power plant directives, policies or procedures, and keeps power plant supervisor informed of abnormal conditions.
  • Maintain power plant spaces in a clean, organized, and hazard-free condition at all times by ensuring floors are swept and kept free of water, oil, or other fluids, and performs other floor/plant maintenance duties as assigned by plant supervisor.
  • Clean, paint, and preserve assigned areas and equipment as directed by the power plant supervisor, ensuring the plant is kept in a clean and hazard-free condition.
  • Assume property accountability of power plant tools and equipment during shift operations to preclude loss of assets of the hospital.
  • Completes assigned duties and all shift responsibilities IAW plant policies and procedures before turning over a shift, evidenced through plant logs, EMS printouts, and supervisor observation.
  • Ensures power plant security directives, policies, and procedures are adhered to at all times.
  • Operate power plant equipment in a manner to minimize the risk of the loss of any utilities necessary for the provision of health care in the hospital.
  • Assume full responsibility for plant operations during evening/weekend/holiday shifts, and briefs the relief operators on all significant events IAW plant procedures and guidelines.
  • Coordinate with other shop personnel to obtain assistance and information on utilities supported by the Power Plant.
  • In the event of an unexpected failure of any utility, item or equipment in the power plant, identify the cause of the failure and take necessary action to maintain continuity of utility's service to the hospital.
  • Initiate emergency notification procedures, IAW Engineering Department contingency plans, policies, or procedures.
  • Maintain and annotate power plant logs required by departmental and power plant policies/procedures and logs accurately reflects plant operating conditions at all times.
