Occ Summary
Provide clinical assessment, physiological monito ring and testing toassist with diagnosis, management, and prevention of sleep relateddisorders with the use of various diagnostic and therapeuti c toolsproviding care to patients of all ages. These tools include but a re notlimited to polysomnography, scoring of clinical events according toprofession and laboratory guidelines (such as respiratory events,cardi ac events, limb movements, arousals, etc.), generating accuratereports by tabulating sleep/wake and clinical event data,.positiveairway pressure devices, oximeter, capnography, actigraphy, nocturnaloxygen, screening devices, and questionnaires.
Work Performed
Level 1- Verify the medical order and protocol.- Explain the procedure and orient the patient to the sleep center.- Prepare and calibrate equipment requi red for testing to determineproper functioning.- Perform routine PAP mas k fitting.- Apply electrodes and sensors according to accepted published standards.- Assist with following "lights out" procedures to establish a nddocument baseline values (such as body position, oxyhemoglobinsaturati on, respiratory and heart rates, etc.)- Assist and observe polysomnograp hy data acquisition.- Document routineobservations, including sleep sta ges and clinicalevents, changes in procedure, and other significant even ts in order tofacilitate scoring and interpretation of polysomnography r esults.- Assist with appropriate interventions (including actions necess ary forpatient safety and therapeutic intervention (e.g. BPAP, O2adminis tration).- Assist with following "lights on" procedures to verify integr ity ofcollected data and complete the data collection process. (e.g. lea rn toperform the physiological and instrument calibrations and instructs thepatient on completing questionnaires, etc.)- Perform routine polysom nography data acquisition while monitoringstudy-tracing quality to ensur e signals are artifact-free.- Identify and report signal abnormalities.- Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize andprovide age specific care in the treatment, assessment and education ofadolescen t, adult, and geriatric patients.Level 2- Perform all duties of the Leve l 1.- Review history, physical information, medications, procedure reque stand study protocol.- Prepare and calibrate equipment required for test ing to determineproper functioning and make adjustments, if necessary.- Perform "lights out" procedures to establish and document baselinevalues (such as body position, oxyhemoglobin saturation, respiratory andheart r ates, etc.).- Independently perform routine and c-pap/split polysomnogra phy dataacquisition while monitoring study-tracing quality to ensure sig nals areartifact-free and make adjustments, if necessary.- Implement app ropriate interventions (including actions necessary forpatient safety an d therapeutic intervention (e.g. BPAP, O2administration).- Perform "ligh ts on" procedures to verify integrity of collected dataand complete the data collection process. (e.g. learn to perform thephysiological and ins trument calibrations and instructs the patient oncompleting questionnair es, etc.).Level 3- Perform all duties of the Level 1 and 2.- Collect, an alyze and integrate patient informationin order toidentify and meet the patient-specific needs (physical/mentallimitations, current emotional/p hysiological status regarding thetesting procedure, pertinent medical/so cial history) to determine finaltesting parameters/procedures in conjunc tion with the ordering physicianor clinical director and laboratory prot ocols.- Explain pre-testing, testing and post-testing procedures to thep atient.- Perform routine and complex PAP mask fitting.- Perform routine and complex PAP/split/BPAP/ASV polysomnography dataacquisition while mon itoring study-tracing quality to ensure signals areartifact-free and mak e adjustments, if necessary.- Perform positive airway pressure (PAP) mas k fitting.- Follow procedural protocols [such as Multiple Sleep Latency Test(MSLT), Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT), parasomnia studies, P AP,oxygen titration etc.] to ensure collection of appropriate data.- Ove rsees and performs difficult and unusual procedures and therapeuticinter ventions.- Performs needed maintenance on equipment to include communica tion ofproblem to co-workers, appropriate vendor or the supervisor.- Tro ubleshoots equipment and lab issues independently, considered anequipmen t super user.- Demonstrates ability to analyze complex situations and ap plypolicy.- Develops clinical standards and protocols.- Generate requis itions for patient studies prn/check in patients.- Assign nightly worklo ad to coworkers.- Processes daily charges.- Perform minimum number of ho urs designated a year as charge tech.

Level 1A Polysomnography Technician develops competency in and pe rforms thebasics of polysomnography testing and associated intervention s underdirect supervision of aPolysomnography Technologist 2 or a Polyso mnography Technologist 3,10 hours of CEUs, selects 1 choice from a list of options forprofessional growth (e.g., member of national organization , committeework).Must be enrolled in AASM A-Step on-line education modul es.Level 2A Polysomnography Technologist 2 performs comprehensive polyso mnographytesting and analysis, and associated interventions under the ge neralsupervision of a Polysomnography Technologist (RPSGT) 3 and/or thec linical director (MD, PhD, DO) or designee.A Polysomnography Technologis t 2 can provide supervision of aPolysomnography Technician.12 hours of C E, 10 must be CEUs, selects 3 choices from a list ofoptions for professi onal growth.Level 3A Polysomnography Technologist 3 works under the gene ral supervision ofthe clinicaldirector(M.D., D.O., or PhD) or designee to provide comprehensiveevaluation and treatment of sleep disorders. Thi s may involvepolysomnography, diagnostic and therapeutic services or pat ient care andeducation. A Polysomnography Technologist 3 can perform the dutiesdefined for a Polysomnography Technologist 2 and may providesuper vision of other staff.16 hours of CE, 10 must be CEUs, selects 5 choices from a list ofoptions for professional growth.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
Level I High school diploma or GED or 1 year of post-secondary education, or current enrollment in an accredited educational program leading to an Associates Degree in a health related field with an emphasis in polysomnography. Level 2 Associates Degree in a health related field preferred, or successful completion of a polysomnography program, of no less than one year in duration, associated with a state license and/or nationally accredited educational facility. Level 3 Associates Degree in a health related field preferred in polysomnography, or successful completion of a polysomnography program, of no less than one year in duration, associated with a state license and/or nationally accredited educational facility.
Experience
Level 1 With an associate's degree in a health related field, no experience required; otherwise 6 months of direct patient care experience. Level 2 18 months experience in polysomnography testing preferred or Documented proficiency inall required competencies as a Polysomnography Technician. If no associate's degree in a health related field, must have an additional two years experience in direct patient care. Level 3 4 years experience in Polysomnography Technology required.
Degrees, Licensures, Certifications
Level 1 Registered Polysomnography Technologists (RPSGT) required. Maintain current BLS certification. Level 2 Registered Polysomnography Technologists (RPSGT) required.
