Position Overview:
The Playworker is an integral part of our floor staff and is a responsible, creative, and outgoing individual. They have experience and interest in working with children. Playworkers assist our visitors as they explore our hands-on exhibits. They are responsible for providing the highest level of customer service and engagement for visitors. Playworkers collaborate with other staff members to create and facilitate meaningful educational programs. Successful Playworkers perform their duties with enthusiasm, imagination, and a passion for education.
Primary Role and Responsibilities:
- Promote the Power of Play by directly engaging with children and families to maximize their learning and enjoyment in the museum
- Maintain a clean and safe environment
- Staff daily assigned activities in exhibit spaces
- Prep materials for exhibits, activities, programs, and events as well as support educators during scheduled programs and events
- Assist with crowd control during busy operational hours, such as holidays, weekends, and school vacation weeks
- Provide assistance to visitors by answering general questions concerning museum offerings, exhibits and scheduled programs
- May work at the front desk, greet guests, answer the phone and operate sales register for admissions and membership transactions.
Qualifications:
- Education:
- High school diploma
- Early childhood and/or elementary program/camp counseling experience a plus
- Pursuing a degree in Education or Teaching Certification; Education degree, a plus
- Experience:
- Ability to interact positively with children, adults, and large groups
- Ability to work with a diverse group of staff and visitors
- Ability to adapt to unpredictable situations
- Skills:
- Ability and desire to learn new things quickly and to perform repetitive tasks with high degree of care and accuracy
- Ability and desire to contribute ideas and to create materials
- Excellent communication skills
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Able to command attention of children and adults and lead activities in group settings
- Able to follow through on tasks and to seek assistance from appropriate staff members
- Able to multi-task and to remain calm and courteous under pressure
- Demonstrates a team approach and is flexible; can adjust to different roles
- Able to serve as Birthday Party Host and Tour Facilitator
- Physical:
- Ability to kneel, sit on the floor, walk and/or stand for prolonged periods of time
Time Commitment:
- Anticipated hours are approximately 20 hours per week (usually in 3 or 7 hour shifts Thursday through Saturday). Occasional weekend and holiday shifts may be required. At least one weekend day is mandatory.
- This is a flexible position which allows for other part-time or freelance jobs
- Punctuality and attendance are required for all assigned shifts
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $15.00 - $17.00 per hour
