Position Purpose

The Physician Substitute (LPN, EMT-P, EMT-B) is responsible for determining donor eligibility by performing donor eligibility assessments, including medical history interviews, physical examination, educating donors on donor testing, and managing donor adverse events. The Physician Substitute is also responsible for assisting with the management and administration of employee counseling, testing, and follow-up of employee exposures to blood or plasma. Essential Job Functions

  • Greet and register new plasma donors into a donor management computer system.
  • Conduct screening procedures to include taking blood pressure, pulse, temperature, weight, and arm checks.
  • Perform finger sticks to test donors for hematocrit testing and total protein testing utilizing screening equipment.
  • Monitor the electronic donor questionnaire system.
  • Determine donor eligibility by performing donor eligibility assessments, to include; medical history interview, physical examination, educating donor on donor testing, HIV/AIDS virus, donation risks, informed consent, confidential self-exclusion and reviewing Serological Protein Electrophoresis (SPE) testing as required.
  • Initiate and assist in donor investigations regarding Post Donation Information.
  • Evaluate and manage donor adverse events.
  • Follow the SOP’s for all medical emergencies, to include communication with the Center Medical Director, and donor transport to emergency medical care facilities.
  • Communicate and seek direction from Center Medical Director and Center Management as needed.

· Monitor and evaluate the operation and provide feedback to the Center Director.

· Selection of suitable plasmapheresis donors through the use of Standard Operating Procedure Manual (with particularly detailed attention to communications related to viral disease information and plasmapheresis informed consent), current State and Federal guidelines, OSHA, CLIA, and cGMP, all internal company procedures, and via personal education and experience.

· Timely review of accumulated data to confirm established donor suitability.

· Assist with management and administration of employee counseling, testing, and follow- up of employee exposures to blood or plasma.

· Provide appropriate and confidential counseling to unacceptable individuals.

· Provide a level of care during unexpected or severe donor adverse events.

· Assist in employee training as necessary.

· Consult with Center Laboratory/Medical Director/Licensed Physician as required by the Physician Substitute Program. Communicate with Medical Director where necessary to ensure donor suitability issues are addressed appropriately.

· Report all unsafe situations or conditions to supervisor.

Education & Experience

· High school diploma or GED required.

· Licensed or certified in the state where duties will be assigned: Registered Nurse (RN), Nurse Practitioner (NP), Physician Assistant (PA), Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), EMT-P, or EMT-B. A license is required.

  • Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification required.
