Job Description
The Department of Surgery at Maine Medical Center (MMC—the hospital) and Maine Medical Partners (MMP—the employed medical group) seek a surgical leader for the practice, as well as Division Director of Colorectal Surgery (MMC). Candidates must be fellowship-trained and board-certified in Colorectal Surgery, eligible for licensure/work in the State of Maine and have more than 5 years of experience. Research, financial training, leadership experience, and clinical excellence are particularly valued.
Located in Portland, MMC is a 637 bed tertiary care hospital serving southern, western and central Maine and eastern New Hampshire, also with referrals from northern Maine and other parts of NH. MMC is the specialist/sub-specialist flagship hospital of MaineHealth, an integrated health system of 14 hospitals that also provides primary and basic specialty services through a network of owned and another 2 affiliated hospitals and outpatient offices throughout the region.
MMP is Maine's largest multi-specialty medical group serving the healthcare needs of patients locally and throughout northern New England. This high quality team of 600 physicians and 350 advanced practice professionals provides a wide range of hospital based, primary, specialty, and sub-specialty adult and pediatric care delivered throughout a network of 54 locations across the State and acts as a regional referral network. More recently it has become the tertiary hub of MaineHealth, a 9 hospital system comprising 1500 providers.
MMC, the Department of Surgery, and the Section of Colorectal Surgery have a tradition of strong clinical performance and a commitment to teaching including medical students and surgical residents. MMC, in partnership with Tufts University School of Medicine, offers the Maine Track program, during which students spend their final three years of medical school in Maine. Through this innovative curriculum, students are exposed to the unique aspects of rural practice as well as training at a major tertiary medical center. The MMC General Surgery Residency is over 60 years old and is known for the quality of its graduates and their successful placement in sub-specialty training programs. MMC is a high volume center for colorectal cancer, recognized by US News and World Report. The Section leads a multi-disciplinary conference on colon surgery and the rectal cancer program is nearing accreditation by NAPRC, which would make it the only accredited program in New England. The institution, Department and Section are committed to academic productivity, as well as high quality teaching and clinical activity. Experience with clinical research is an asset.
As such, all candidates at assistant, associate or professor academic rank, should have a strong background in clinical colorectal surgery, including open and laparoscopic approaches, anorectal disease, colonoscopy, and office management of colorectal disease. Candidates should also bring interest and either established skills or willingness to advance the clinical, teaching and research ambitions of the institution and Department. Experience with robotic surgery, transanal surgery, or multidisciplinary Inflammatory Bowel Disease clinics will be an asset. Successful candidates will be appointed to the rank of Assistant, Associate, or full Professor, through our partner, Tufts University, commensurate with experience and accomplishments. Compensation is nationally competitive and structured to foster a collegial environment.
Portland is a dynamic coastal community with easy access to recreational opportunities in the mountains, lakes and ocean, and a rich arts experience. School quality is excellent. Daily living is shockingly easy for those used to metropolitan living—commutes exceeding 15minutes are considered onerous. It is a great place to live and raise a family. The town of Portland is reputed for its quality restaurants, art community, and accepting attitudes. The state of Maine has been a leading force in response to the Covid pandemic and has become a place to which many would like to relocate for its high vaccination rate, low hospitalization rates, and forward-thinking approach.
Maine Medical Partners is committed to creating an equitable, inclusive environment that is welcoming to diverse faculty. Clinical research opportunities are offered in conjunction with CORE (our Center for Outcomes Research and Education) and benchtop/translational work at MMCRI (the Maine Medical Center Research Institute).
Interested individuals should forward a CV and cover letter to Gina Mallozzi, Physician Recruiter, at gmallozzi@mainehealth.org.
