Responsibilities

The James J. Peters (Bronx) VA Medical Center is in search of an energetic, visionary leader to serve as the Chief of Primary Care. The James J. Peters VA is a tertiary care highly affiliated facility situated on an attractive campus in the north Bronx, serving a veteran population from the Bronx, Westchester and Rockland Counties, Northern New Jersey, and the New York City metropolitan area. The JJP VA serves as a National Center for Alzheimer's Disease, Schizophrenia and Alcohol Abuse, a Spinal Cord Injury Center, a Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) center, a Geriatric Research Education Clinical Center (GRECC), and a Mental Illness Research Education and Clinical Center (MIRECC). We are closely affiliated with the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, the Hospital for Special Surgery, and Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons.

The Chief of Primary Care is a creative, experienced and dynamic leader with strong administrative, interpersonal and organizational skills. As a key member of the clinical leadership team, the Chief of Primary Care has the clinical and managerial responsibilities for the James J. Peters Primary Care Service. Primary care services are provided at the main medical center in the Bronx, and at three community-based outpatient clinics (Yonkers, White Plains and Queens). Approximately 12,000 patients receive their Primary Care through the James J. Peters VA Medical Center.

The Primary Care Chief should have a strong track record of leadership in internal medicine and primary care and in academic program development. Major goals for this position include improvement in access with delivery of high-quality, patient-centered care; expanded use of telemedicine and connected health modalities, enhancement of training programs, and the growth of health services research in Primary Care. The incumbent should possess excellent leadership skills and be knowledgeable and proficient with quality improvement, system redesign including outpatient clinic access and hospital flow, as well as the Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT) and Patient Centered Care transformational efforts. The incumbent promotes an effective mix of coordination and support of clinical care by evaluating current and potential patient needs, clinical workload and resources, and special programs/mandates.

The incumbent recommends appointment and clinical privileges for each member of Primary Care Service and is responsible for ensuring that individuals with clinical privileges competently provide service within the scope of privileges granted. There may be other duties as assigned by the supervisor based on individual competence and organizational needs. Strong administrative and organizational support is available to support the position. The James J. Peters Medical Center is seeking candidates with sufficient clinical knowledge and experience to monitor and assess clinical competencies and practices; sufficient interpersonal skills to deal harmoniously with a diverse population of internal and external customers; sufficient time management skills to prioritize completion of a high volume workload; and the ability to achieve results in the setting of constrained resources. Applicants must have a demonstrated ability to meet the responsibilities of this position.

The ideal candidate has strong leadership and managerial experience and skills, program development and implementation, system redesign and experience with cultural transformation leading patient centered care.

    Basic Requirements:
    • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
    • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
    • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
    • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
    • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
