Job Description
The phlebotomist performs venipuncture, as well as collects and labels the specimens for lab processing.
Essential Functions:Obtain blood specimens from patients per laboratory orders by performing venipuncture and finger sticks, competently and expediently with as little patient discomfort as possible
  • Identify the patient by comparing patient information on the requisition to the patient’s identification before venipuncture is performed.
  • Identify the patient and confirm the correct patient record.
  • Communicate with and assist patients in a professional and courteous manner
  • Display a courteous, professional manner towards coworkers, nursing and medical staff
  • Process medical laboratory tests and document results.
  • Review the laboratory schedule and verify and complete orders
. • Monitor and resolve orders in the electronic medical record.
  • Complete appropriate laboratory forms documenting tests performed and providing diagnoses correlating to tests performed.
  • Complete lab requisition forms and produce appropriate labels for forms and specimen tubes, label and record all test tubes, log procedures and file paperwork.
  • Enter patient demographics, tests performed and diagnoses correlating to tests performed in the EMR
  • Order and maintain adequate laboratory supplies, clean and supply venipuncture area
  • Maintain the laboratory including equipment.
  • Dispose all sharp instruments in a rigid sharp container.
  • Maintain records and documentation for proficiency testing and to meet COLA and CLIA requirements and regulations.
  • Prioritize STAT and scheduled appointments and draws
  • Follow all policies and procedures for the Clinical laboratory
  • Ability to work closely with Physicians, staff, instrument and supply vendors
  • Clinical Care: Ensure that quality patient care is delivered to all patients on a 24-hour basis, and the unit is maintained in accordance with professional and regulatory standards and the philosophy and goals of Hoag.

Education, Training and ExperienceRequired: Minimum 1 year of Phlebotomy experience.Education MA Certificate or completion or a Phlebotomy Training Program.Knowledge of Centrifuge hardware, Orchard or other LIS, EHR system softwarePreferred:
