Pharmacy technicians at this grade level may be assigned as a supervisor; lead technician in a particular area of the pharmacy; a controlled substance technician; an investigational drug technician; a procurement/inventory management technician; a clinical pharmacy technician; or similar assignment with this level of complexity. The GS-7 level is for select, complex pharmacy technician positions, as established by each health care facility.


Responsibilities

This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT and will remain open until December 27, 2021. The initial cut-off date for referral of eligible applications will be 12 April 2021, with subsequent cut-off dates every Monday. Eligible applications received after that date will be referred at regular intervals or as additional vacancies occur on an as-needed basis until positions are filled.

Birmingham Salary Range: $43,800 to $56,942


One pharmacy procurement/customer service technician performs a high level of duties that consist of procurement and inventory management responsibilities. The incumbent is responsible for requisitioning the required pharmaceutical and supplies from appropriate mandatory sources. Inventory responsibilities include the independent determination of stock levels for a highly complex pharmacy. Although this position is under the supervision of a pharmacist, incumbent will demonstrate independent technical judgment as well as comprehensive thorough working knowledge of pharmacy practice and procedures.

    QualificationsBasic Requirements:

    • English Language Proficiency. Pharmacy technicians appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English
    • Certification. Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at grades GS-6 and above.
    GS-7 Grade Determination: Two years of experience as a pharmacy technician beyond the successful completion of a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree that included at least 24 semester hours of courses related to pharmacy or pharmacy technology; OR successful completion of pertinent specialized training courses in pharmaceutical and pharmacy services while serving in the Armed Forces.

    In addition, your resume must demonstrate the following Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    • Ability to evaluate, analyze workflow, and coordinate work activities.
    • Ability to independently gather, evaluate, and analyze data to generate reports and/or for other projects/statistical purposes.
    • Knowledge of pharmacy policies and procedures sufficient to train and orient new employees and other staff
    • Comprehensive knowledge of the operation and care of specialized pharmaceutical equipment.
    • Comprehensive knowledge of the procurement and formulary process.
    • Comprehensive knowledge of investigational drug policies and procedures.
    • Comprehensive knowledge of controlled substance policies and procedures, and the ability to identify and investigate discrepancies in these policies and procedures.
    • Comprehensive knowledge of, and ability to, analyze data in VA information systems.
