Job Description

TITLE: PCA Transporter

JOB OVERVIEW: This position is responsible for assisting with expedient and professional care and throughput to include escort, transport, and other assigned duties.

AREA OF ASSIGNMENT: PCS Float Pool

HOURS OF WORK: weekdays 4pm to 12:30am, weekends 11am to 7:30pm

RESPONSIBLE TO: Manager, Patient Care Services

PREREQUISITES:

1. Current licensure to practice in the State of Washington as a Certified Nursing Assistant.

2. BLS certification required.

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Able to communicate effectively in oral and written form in the English Language.

  • Neat and well groomed appearance.

  • Demonstrates effective interpersonal skills in a diverse population.

UNIQUE PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS, ENVIRONMENT AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Requires working as part of the team at the direction of the CAR to ensure efficient patient flow.

  • Requires the ability to effectively communicate with staff, physicians, and patients.

  • Requires working under changing conditions depending on the schedules of the departments.

  • Includes the potential for exposure to body fluids and other conditions common to hospitals.

  • Requires transporting patients via wheelchair and stretcher throughout the facility.

  • Must be able to provide safe patient handling as defined in VMC's Safe Patient Handling guidelines and policies to safely and appropriately transfer or move patients (or objects) of varying abilities, weights, and amounts of staff assistance. Must be able to handle loads up to 72 pounds below waist level. Requires ability to participate in team lifting. Must be able to operate patient lifting equipment and patient handling devices accurately and safely.

  • Requires the ability to stoop, bend, reach, crouch, climb on step stools and squat.

  • Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time (up to 80% of the day) as required for patient care duties, moving patients or supplies to other units, patient rounding, and other related duties.

  • Requires full body range of motion including ability to reach from floor to overhead levels, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.

  • Requires corrected vision, hearing to normal range, and ability to distinguish colors.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

B. UNIQUE JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Transport/escort patients via wheelchair, stretcher, along with all support equipment necessary, i.e., IV pumps, oxygen tanks. Uses IV tote safety devices on stretchers and/or obtains appropriate help with difficult transports.

  • Answers phone courteously and responds to calls promptly.

  • Assist technologist to assist patient off and on procedure table.

  • Available via pager, prompt response expected.

  • Demonstrates ability to use portable phone.

  • Knowledge of isolation precautions.

7. Reports significant signs and symptoms as indicated below.

Any nausea or emesis.

Any change in level of consciousness or mobility.

Any abrasion, skin tear, bruising, swelling in extremities or IV site, or abdominal distention.

Any IV or tube feeding pump alarm.

Any low IV or tube feeding bag (less than 50 cc).

Any change in skin color, moistness, pallor, cyanosis, or diaphoresis.

Any change in breathing pattern, shortness of breath, amount and type of sputum.

Any complaint of discomfort or pain.

Any significant change in patient or family behavior or emotional status.

Any report of dizziness or witnessed patient unsteadiness.

Any problem with patient compliance to care.

8. Recognizes and responses appropriately to:

Cardiac/pulmonary arrest.

Psychiatric emergencies.

9. Demonstrates safe use of patient care equipment.

  • Demonstrates understanding of the developmental/behavioral characteristics of ages served.

  • Adolescent

  • Adult

  • Geriatric (older adult)

HCA - Additional duties:

1. Performs phlebotomy as requested according to correct procedure.

2. Picks up and delivers blood.

3. Performs chem strip procedure according to procedure.

4. Picks up and delivers medications per policy.
