Job Description

Job Summary:

Under the supervision and direction of the MHS Manager or Team Lead, the patient transporter coordinates with doctors, nurses and other medical professionals to take patients from their rooms to various locations throughout the hospital. This can include helping patients in and out of bed, or using wheelchairs or stretchers to move them from the emergency room to a room, from a location to a treatment area or other locations.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Transports patients by assisting/lifting patients on and off beds, moving them to and from special services, treatment areas, and operating rooms, using wheelchairs or moveable beds.
  • Transports equipment and supplies by picking up requisitioned orders and delivering them to assigned treatment areas and patient care areas.
  • Helps patients move in wheel chairs and helps in standing or walking when required.
  • Utilizes proper safe patient handling techniques.
  • Attends to patients wholeheartedly and ensures their physical safety as well as overall comfort.
  • Collects transport equipment and returns it to the appropriate storage area.
  • Utilizes the Patient Tracking System.
  • Demonstrates proper use of the patient transport tracking system/log sheets.
  • Cares for and maintains department equipment.
  • Performs related services, such as sanitizing transport equipment.
  • Comforts patients and their families by offering support and encouragement, being punctual and attentive to procedure schedules.
  • Maintains safe, clean and neat work environment by following standards and procedures.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality related to work information (in accordance with HIPAA).
  • Updates job knowledge and participates in continuous training.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Qualification and Requirements:

  • High School Diploma/ GED or equivalent experience.
  • Must be able to work legally in the United States.
  • Must pass background and drug screenings.
  • Healthcare experience preferred.
  • Able to speak, read, and write English fluently.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Excellent communication and people skills.
  • Successful completion of Patient Safety Associate (PSA), Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI), and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) trainings.
  • Required to meet immunization or health screening requirements.
  • Passion for customer service and attention to detail.

Physical Requirements:

  • Regularly required to stand, walk, use hands, talk, see, and hear and sit for a long period of time
  • Must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds frequently and up to 75 pounds occasionally.
  • Must be able to push and pull (on wheelchair) 100 to 350 pounds, frequently over considerable distance.
  • Ability to work flexible schedules and/or extended hours is sometimes required.
