Job Summary
The Transporter is expected to transport patients, non-patient materials, and visitors within the hospital.
Essential Job Functions
- Regular, consistent, on-site, and timely attendance.
- Introduce self to patient and explain transport plan and destination.
- State own name and describe mode of transportation being used and destination to patient.
- Retrieve patient's nurse if patient has questions regarding tests/therapy where they are being transferred to.
- Provide for appropriate mode of transportation considering the patient's condition, comfort, and any safety factors.
- Use critical thinking skills to determine mode of transport.
- Contact nursing staff with questions related to transport.
- Coordinate tasks when able.
- Anticipate problems and follows through.
- Transfer patient to/from cart, wheelchair, or other transport vehicle according to procedure and is knowledgeable and effectively operates transport equipment.
- Maintain proper body mechanics.
- Use patient lift equipment.
- Seek assistance when necessary, i.e. carts, electronic devices, etc.
- Identify patient prior to transport.
- Ask patient to state their name.
- Check patient identification bracelet.
- Alert staff when patient's bracelet is missing.
- Record patient transport on the Daily Transportation Log on the patient care unit or in the ancillary department.
- Check transport log.
- Obtain patient chart for all transfers (and plate when necessary).
- Complete all required paperwork.
- Determine patient code status prior to transport.
- Check transport log for (LH entity)
- Reminds staff when (LH entity)
- Use appropriate isolation techniques and comply with universal precautions.
- According to isolation posting, secure and don appropriate protective equipment before entering patient's room.
- Remove PPE and follow hand washing protocol before taking patient out of room.
- Ensure patient is wearing PPE, when appropriate, before taking patient out of room.
- Store transport equipment appropriately throughout the day.
- Report broken equipment.
- Return transport equipment to department when able.
- Transport notification occurs predominantly by preset department patient schedules (i.e. physical therapy, radiology, etc.) or universally for inpatient transport via phone, pager. Respond personally within 20 minutes of initial notification (if busy with another transport) or make contact with another partner escort for back-up on patient transfers, to most effectively move patients through the system in a timely fashion.
- Goes directly to location/department for patient needing transported.
- Contact the appropriate department as assigned for the shift (or the receiving department, as appropriate) or the Escort Manager regarding unforeseen delays and possible reassignment of immediate transport responsibility.
- Assists in coordinating patient trips.
- Obtain permission from nursing staff for patient transport from one ancillary department to another.
- Record in log when patient is taken between departments to alert members of escort staff.
- Serve as greeter for visitors, patients and employees entering Excela Health. In addition to performing basic customer service and reception duties. Screen all visitors prior to entering and logs visitors in tracking program as appropriate.
- Perform other tasks as assigned/requested.

Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Strong leadership ability, good organizational skills, independent, decision-making and critical thinking skills, sound judgment.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills.
- Ability to multi-task and prioritize assignments.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience working with patients preferred but not required.
License, Certification & Clearances
- Act 33 with renewal.
- Act 34 with renewal.
- Act 73 FBI clearance with renewal.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) approved curriculum of the American Heart Association (CPR and AED) program required.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities, but does serve as a coach and mentor for other positions in the department.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
- Incumbent will be scheduled based on operational need (rotate shifts, standby, on-call, etc.).
- Travel may be expected locally between Excela Health locations.
