Part Time Payroll and Accounting SpecialistThe Payroll and Accounting Specialist reports to the Assistant Controller and owns the processing and accounting for payroll and benefits. This role will also support accounts payable and general accounting and will be responsible for contributing to financial reporting, internal controls, and process development. Remote work available with occasional office visits. Estimated to be 20 hours per week based on the workload. Role/Responsibilities:
- Ensures paychecks are complete, accurate, and paid in a timely manner.
- Ensures employee deductions, including benefits, are complete and accurate.
- Ensures required tax filings are complete, accurate, and filed in a timely manner.
- Records payroll journal entries each pay period and reconciles payroll-related general ledger accounts on a monthly basis.
- Processes new hires and terminations.
- Owns payroll compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, including but not limited to record retention, COBRA, FMLA, FLSA, and ACA. Stays privy to changing regulations.
- Prepares materials required for internal and external auditors, including the Department of Workforce Services, DCAA, and DCMA.
- Works directly with VP of People & Culture and benefits broker to manage benefits administration, including annual open enrollment.
- Reconciles monthly benefits billings to internal records to ensure accuracy and completeness.
- Supports accounts payable function by recording transactions, verifying proper approval and coding, and processing payments.
- Plays a key role in system implementations to ensure compliance, efficiency, and value-added analytics and reporting.
- Works collaboratively with other functions to support company objectives.
- Ability to maintain strict confidence when dealing with confidential information.

- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to see the big picture and ensure daily work supports the strategic plan.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field preferred. FPC or CPP certification preferred.
- 5+ years of payroll experience with proven track record of success in positions of increasing responsibility.
- Strong knowledge of local, state, and federal employment tax laws.
- Experience processing payroll for 200+ employees in multiple states.
- Experience in accounts payable and general accounting.
- Experience with defense contracting preferred.
- Proficient with MS Office Suite, including advanced Excel skills.
- Demonstrated ability to quickly learn new systems, and extract and manipulate required data.
- Excellent analytical and reporting skills and experience supporting a strategic plan with data-driven recommendations.
- Work is performed Monday through Friday with ability to work overtime and weekends.
