Department Information

The Indiana University School of Dentistry has been advancing oral health in the state and beyond since 1879, when it was founded as the Indiana Dental College. The Billing & Insurance department provides remote support to all of the IU School of Dentistry Clinics.

Job Summary
  • Coordinates insurance claim filings including submission, tracking, payment posting, allocation, and appeal of denials.
  • Submits and tracks pre-determinations and prior authorizations.
  • Establishes and maintains contact with third party pay (insurance) providers to ensure awareness of process, qualifications, and coverage changes.
  • Counsels patients, students, faculty, and staff regarding third party coverage.
  • Generates patient statements and other invoices.
  • Performs data entry, posts payments, reconciles billings and invoices, checks balances and maintains patient files.
  • Works with insurance companies to perform insurance billing, review, and verification of accounts in accordance with program provisions.
  • Verifies eligibility and benefits, obtains pre-authorizations, enters medical codes, requests payments, and resolves account issues.
  • May assist with other functions of revenue cycle operations.
  • May perform accounts receivable audits and adjustments.
  • May run reports related to medical billing.
Qualifications

EDUCATION

Required

  • High school diploma or GED.

Preferred

  • Post high school courses in insurance billing, data processing, and medical terminology.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

  • 2 years of experience in medical billing, or a related field.

SKILLS

Required

  • Proficient communication skills.
Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
