CPS Energy is seeking a motivated Paralegal to support attorneys by navigating and managing CPS Energy’s Open Records process and other regulatory matters. This includes coordinating legal processes, researching legal authorities, investigating facts, and preparing legal documents.

Position Summary

CPS Energy is seeking a motivated Paralegal to support attorneys by navigating and managing CPS Energy’s Open Records process and other regulatory matters. This includes coordinating legal processes, researching legal authorities, investigating facts, and preparing legal documents.

Tasks and Responsibilities
  • Assists attorneys within Legal Services with governmental and regulatory matters;
  • Manages subpoenas and public information requests received by Legal Services, providing an initial review and options to proceed. This includes managing the legal departments various email accounts pertaining to the duties, entering information into the database on a daily basis and processing the requests accordingly. In addition, the responsibilities include updating the internal procedures and/or processes for handling the various duties related to the open records requests, subpoenas, non-disclosure agreements, etc.;
  • Responsible for research as directed by counsel. This research will require a basic knowledge of sources of case law, court opinions and Attorney General Opinions;
  • Supports aspects of the litigation process, including but not limited to initial review, discovery, research, potential preparation for trial, etc.;
  • Assists with ad hoc projects as needed;
  • Tracks contract work flow for in-house counsel and provide status updates to internal contacts;
  • Database knowledge and experience; aptitude and willingness to learn new systems and take ownership of database; and
  • All duties must be performed in a very professional and efficient manner, while maintaining confidentiality and adhering to applicable ethics requirements. Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum SkillsMinimum Knowledge and AbilitiesParalegal Certification with some knowledge of the Texas courts system, litigation, governmental and utility regulatory matters and basic contract law. General understanding of the Texas Public Information Act or the ability to achieve proficiency through training, within 4 months or less. Some experience working for a senior executive or lawyer or as a Paralegal in a law firm or corporate law department. Experience with Lexis or Westlaw, PACER and the CM/ECF system, SAP, document management systems, and Legal Tracker or the ability to achieve proficiency through training, within 4 months or less. Excellent communication skills, both oral and written. Proficiency in MS word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. Proficient with Adobe Acrobat. Good working knowledge of standard office technology and equipment, and general office/administrative procedures Preferred Qualifications
  • Some college courses in business related field from an accredited university.
  • Must be able to function effectively in a busy, team-oriented environment.
  • Able to effectively multi-task, manage time sensitive documents and have exceptional organizational skills in a fast-paced environment.
  • Self-sufficiency in performing administrative tasks.
  • Strong multi-tasking skills.
