Role Purpose: Performs substantive and procedural work under the supervision of an attorney. Provides legal assistance and performs a variety of legal-related tasks including document preparation, review, research, and coordination. Responsible for maintaining confidential and/or client privileged information.
Key Responsibilities:
- Summarizes, reviews and monitors recurring/ongoing legal matters under the supervision of an attorney
- Manages intake of new matters and assists with the management of information, including locating, collecting and managing related data and documents in various electronic systems
- Completes standard documentation templates (contracts, NDA's, etc.), distributes for review, and obtains necessary approvals and signatures. May negotiate changes with third parties
- Responds to client questions and requests with input from an attorney, as required
- Reviews incoming documents, identifies issues, and provides recommendation to counsel for transactions, litigation and investigations
- Drafts standard communication within specified parameters
- Conducts, summarizes, and analyzes basic research
- Collaborates with global teams to complete work
- Coordinates filings and registration of documents with government agencies
- Coordinates and manages document collection and discovery in connection with subpoenas or adversarial legal proceedings
- Trains new personnel to establish procedures and processes
Required Skills:
- Experience working in a litigation setting (minimum 5 years) either in a law firm or as part of an in-house legal team
- Ability to accurately interpret legal documents, including contracts and court opinions, and to summarize and flag key issues for counsel to review
- Proficiency using legal databases such as Lexis, Westlaw, ECF, and Lex Machina to perform legal research and/or review and monitor legal dockets and case activity
- Ability to manage and effectively complete large-scale discovery procedures, particularly e-discovery, including performing witness interviews, organizing and performing document collection and management, reviewing document requests and confirming compliance, utilizing data management platforms to organize and deliver documents, and coordination with outside parties on status and execution
- Ability to establish and maintain internal document management systems
- Ability to grasp and follow established protocols, paying particular attention to getting the details right
- Ability to identify opportunities for improvements in Litigation Department processes
- General and specific computer systems knowledge (Access and Excel databases, PowerPoint and other computer-based systems)
- Ability to leverage computer-based systems to manage workload and increase efficiency
- Ability to adopt new tools and manage customer expectations so that new technology increases efficiency
- Ability to handle highly confidential and proprietary documents in a secure manner
- Ability to interact with others, including colleagues within the Department, in a professional manner
- Consistent and dependable work habits and solid work ethic
- Ability to manage multiple workstreams and cases and successfully balance overlapping projects and assignments
- Ability to quickly learn new skills
- Ability to read and draft legal documents in a timely manner and to synthesize information for a wide range of legal topics
- Proficiency with Microsoft office, including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
Education and Experience:
- Minimum 5-7 years of relevant experience
- Associate’s degree/equivalent education, or equivalent work experience
- Successful track record of performance in previous work experiences
- Bachelor’s degree/equivalent education or equivalent work experience, desired
- Paralegal certification preferred

- Strong attention to detail and ability to multi-task in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
- Comfortable working under constant deadlines, and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
- Experience obtaining and analyzing patent documents and monitoring activity in the U.S. Patent Office
- Familiarity with legal billing platforms and review of invoices from law firms or other vendors
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
