Covanta is seeking an Operations Supervisor to join our Covanta Alexandria/Arlington Waste-to-Energy Facility! This position will report directly to the Operations Manager.JOB SUMMARYThe Operations Supervisor provides functional leadership and direction to the Operations team. This position will report directly to the Operations Manager. The individual must be a proven leader who can provide vision and leadership to achieve daily, yearly, and long-term Operational objectives. The individual must have a good working knowledge of power generation. This person must have the organizational capability to work across multiple functions, systems, and be able to communicate well with operators, mechanics, peers and leadership. They must be able to lead improvement teams, network with appropriate professional organizations and maintain strong connections to regional and corporate technical groups. The position has direct reports including all personnel responsible for waste receiving and handling (Scalehouse Attendants, Equipment Operators, Special Waste Coordinator) as well as Utility Operators responsible for general plant upkeep.Goals for the role
  • Act as a Safety Leader to ensure individual and team Safety remain top priority in the planning and execution of all tasks.
  • Work closely with Company Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) personnel targeting zero incidents and continuous improvement of site EHS performance.
  • Continuous improvement in Operating Discipline, training, and execution of Operational tasks.
The responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Lead in the promotion of a strong safety and environmental stewardship culture.
  • Effectively organize daily activities and oversee proper and efficient daily work of all operations personnel.
  • Manage the record keeping of plant training and daily operations logs and paperwork.
  • Provide guidance and over-site to keep boiler and turbine performance at maximum levels.
  • Manage and implement established operator and technical training programs.
  • Manage the daily schedules of the Special Waste Coordinator, Scalehouse Operators, Utility Operators, Equipment Operators, and their performance reviews.
  • Occasionally fill in for Operations Shift Supervisor coverage as needed.
  • Ensure the plant’s readiness to meet unusual situations and ensure the safe/efficient day-to-day operations.
  • Proficiently inspect boilers and machinery and meet plant performance targets.
  • Oversee or compile various reports at plant, regional, and corporate levels.
  • Adhere to environmental, health, and safety procedures and permit requirements.
  • Updating SOP’s as required to achieve operational excellence.
  • Perform the duties of outage coordinator and scheduling of the operations department.
  • Lead the selection, assignment, development, coaching and performance evaluation of the Operations team.
  • Maintain a metric dashboard for Operations that drives improvement and helps prioritize actions.
  • Develop self, direct reports, and other leaders and subordinates.

Position Requirements

To be considered for this position, you must have a broad background in plant operations, a minimum of 5 years of progressive experience working in or supporting an industrial power generating facility. Minimum of 5 years hands-on experience in a Power Plant environment, including 3 years as a supervisor.

  • Waste-to-Energy maintenance experience preferred
  • Minimum education of a High School Diploma or GED – Bachelor of Science preferred.
  • Must be able to identify needs for improvement and implement change
  • Good computer skills, able to work with ALM/Peoplesoft, Oracle, Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Operations experience with rotating and electrical generation (turbine generator) equipment.
  • Knowledge of mass burn combustion practices is preferred.
  • Knowledge of boiler water and cooling tower treatment programs.
  • Interpersonal, verbal, and written communications and organizational skills.
  • Off-hours work supporting shifts is required.
  • The ASME, QRO/CFO Certification is desirable, or must be able to qualify for this certification within six months of employment.
  • Proficiency with MS Office products (Word/Excel/Outlook/PowerPoint).
  • Familiarity with CMMS Peoplesoft Asset Life Management is ideal.
  • Ability to tolerate moderate extremes in hot/cold, confined spaces, climbing stairs, and ladders.
  • Ability to tolerate frequent standing, walking, crouching, crawling, and kneeling as well as the ability to wear a full-face air-purifying respirator
