Work Schedule: Full Time - 72 Biweekly Hours
Shift: 12-hour, Days
Job Summary:
The Nursing Assistant employs intellectual, interpersonal and technical skills to perform basic patient care. Under the supervision of the Assistant Nurse Manager, Charge Nurse or RN, the Nursing Assistant assists with routine, direct bedside care of patients of various ages as defined by the department scope of service. Such duties include, but are not limited to: personal hygiene, data collection and observation, vital signs, I&O, use of equipment, ADL's, documenting on the medical record, answering call lights, and recognizing and responding to emergency situations. Demonstrates competency in age specific skills for patients: neonate/infant, child, adolescent, adult, geriatric patients. Incorporates physical, motor/sensory adaptation, cognitive, psychosocial factors into the nursing process (e.g., behavior inconsistent with developmental stage, medications, educational needs, abuse/neglect, communication, etc.).
Essential Functions:
- Data Collection/Observation:
- Obtains timely and accurate information regarding patient’s condition (e.g., VS’s, LOC, skin condition, patient requests, etc.).
- Recognizes changes in patient’s condition and reports to team leader in an effective manner.
- Accurately and legibly documents observations, data, care provided, and safety precautions.
- Organization of Care: Initiates an organized work plan for the shift and adjusts plan as needed and/or directed. Assists RN in carrying out plan of care for patients as assigned. Gathers equipment and supplies to function efficiently.
- Direct Care and Tasks:
- Completes personal care, ADL’s; maintains comfort and hygiene. Applies appropriate techniques in transferring/ambulating/ positioning patients.
- Assures that patient and family receive compassionate care with concern for the patient’s emotional, spiritual and physical needs and accepts each patient as a unique individual deserving of respect and dignity.
- Assists in the admission, discharge and transfer of patients as appropriate. Responds promptly and appropriately to patients’ needs.
- Evaluation: Demonstrates competency in technical skills (e.g., psychomotor skills, equipment use and troubleshooting, IV therapy, medication administration).
- QUALITY IMPROVEMENT
- Resource Utilization: Ensures that appropriate supplies and equipment are available, accounted for and used in a cost-effective manner.
- Safety: Helps to provide a clean, comfortable environment for customers and others by taking appropriate safety precautions and responds to urgent safety situations effectively. Practices personal safety standards.
- Productivity:
- Organizes, prioritizes and completes and/or delegates activities and assignments in an efficient manner.
- Demonstrates initiative in assisting others and performing other duties based on skill level and training orientation. Uses all work time productively in work-related activities.
- Participates in department problem solving, suggests improvements, and facilitates change.
Skills:
- Ability to ensure patient confidence and comfort.
- Efficiently communicates with SJHS-HC physicians, nursing staff, patients, their families and other employees both in person and by telephone.
- Reads and comprehends written instructions, correspondence, memorandums and medical records.
- Applies deductive and common sense reasoning ability to problem solve on a frequent basis.
Minimum Position Requirements:
Licenses/Certifications: Current CPR certification.
Preferred Position Qualifications:
Experience: Acute care or specialty experience.
Licenses/Certifications: Nursing Assistant certification
