Job Description

Job Summary

The incumbent is a registered professional nurse practitioner who is responsible for providing professional nursing services that supplement and complement the professional nursing staff and the medical staff's delivery of patient care services. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy, policies, procedures and standards.

Minimum Qualifications

    Education/Training: Graduate of a nurse practitioner program from an accredited School of Nursing. Master’s degree in Nursing required.

    Experience: Previous experience in acute care, perianesthesia care, and/or intensive care

    License/Certification/Registration: Current RN/Advanced Practitioner Licensure in the District of Columbia; Current Certification in Adult Acute Care. Current CPR certification; current ACLS certification Credentialed as a member of the MGUH professional staff.

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Judgement and leadership skills; familiarity/experience with perioperative/perianesthesia process and physiological monitors desirable; excellent interpersonal skills; must be mature, able to set priorities and work independently; must be able to articulate procedures to patients and families; excellent physical assessment skills.

Schedule

Monday- Friday, 4 days/week

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • CLINICAL PRACTICE: Performs clinical functions during the post procedural phase of care including:

    • Performs post procedural evaluation including physical examination, ordering and interpreting appropriate diagnostic testing, obtaining informed consent for procedures and providing patient education.

    • Provides comprehensive post-procedural and postoperative care utilizing protocols and assists physicians/house staff in ongoing patient management as needed.

    • Notifies appropriate physician(s) of abnormal test findings and participates in defining and implementing the plan of care of response to findings

    • Participates in interpretation of diagnostic studies as part of the multidisciplinary team.

    • Provides case management services to patients and coordinates discharge planning and patient education in collaboration with appropriate physicians and multidisciplinary teams.

    • Maintains open communication with referring physicians by providing patient updates and recommendations for discharge planning.

    • Participates in and assists with research protocols and patient recruitment for studies approved to be conducted at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital.

    • Provides patient and family education about procedures performed, ongoing care needs related to procedures, and disease management.

    • Participates in Performance Improvement activities by developing evidence-based protocols and guidelines in collaboration with other members of the team; attending monthly Morbidity and Mortality Conference; and participating in other departmental meetings and conferences regularly.

    • Conducts follow-up contacts with patients, as appropriate.
