DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves performing routine patient care under the direct supervision of a Registered Professional Nurse at the Erie County Medical Center Corporation. The incumbent performs personal care and basic patient care activities which are appropriate to his/her level of knowledge and skill. Part-time employment means work of less than fifty percent of the time prescribed in a normal work week (defined in Rule I(6) of the Rules for the Classified Civil Service of the County of Erie). Supervision is not a function of this position. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Performs all elements of the nursing process, including: patient assessment, data collection, development, updating and revising of Nursing Care Plans, implementation of the Nursing Care Plan, documentation, and health teaching;
Participates in patient care conferences;
Administers medications;
Administers oxygen therapy, including set-up and monitoring;
Administers IV fluids, including: assembling and flushing tubing during set-up, monitoring flow rate, site care/dressing change of peripheral devices and discontinuing peripheral intravenous infusions;
Performs veni puncture;
Performs personal patient care, including bathing, dressing, oral care, turning and positioning, transferring to chair, stretcher or bed, including use of lifting equipment, assisting with ambulation, and range of motion exercises;
Provides for patients nutritional needs by preparing patients for mealtime, feeding, measuring and recording intake and output, and administering enteral feeds;
Provides for patients elimination needs by assisting the patient with bed pan/urinal, bowel/bladder retaining, collection of test specimens, perineal and catheter care, enemas, emptying drainage devices and maintaining gastric suction;
Monitors vital signs, temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, O2 saturation, height, weight, 12 lead EKG;
Performs tracheotomy care and suctioning, urinary catheterizations, sterile dressing changes and wound care and irrigations.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Working knowledge of professional nursing techniques, principles and terminology; working knowledge of the nursing process; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; good interpersonal skills; sound judgment; initiative; resourcefulness; dependability; capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates must be enrolled in a regionally accredited or New York State registered school of professional/registered nursing, of which included completion of two (2) semesters of clinical rotation.
