DutiesSummary

This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the Department of Defense to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

About the Position: Multi-service medical- surgical unit (4E); GI and bariatrics surgery, colorectal surgery, ENT, Oral Maxillary, Facial surgeries, wounded warriors, and Internal Medicine patients. Work hours are 12-hours shifts (0700-1900 or 1900-0700) or "on call" as mission requires.


Responsibilities
  • Provide professional nursing care to eligible beneficiaries (DoD active duty service members, retirees and their families).
  • Perform professional nursing care duties, to include delegating assignments as applicable, completing full nursing assessments, etc.
  • Collaborate with licensed independent providers to make changes to nursing plans according to patient needs.
  • Work in collaboration with a healthcare team.
  • Consulting and communicating with physicians, patients, families, coworkers and other medical/non-medical personnel.
  • Administering scheduled and emergent medications/treatments.
  • Utilizing Electronic Medical Records and automated Medical Systems (i.e., Essentris and Composite Health Care System (CHCS).

    • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 3 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
    • This position requires the incumbent to have tuberculosis testing.
    • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
    • Male applicants born after December 31, 1959 must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.
    • Two year trial/probationary period may be required.
    • This position has mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons (documentation of exemption must be provided upon hire).
    • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
    • This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
    • This position requires the incumbent to fulfill credentialing requirements and obtain and maintain appropriate/relevant clinical privileges.
    • This position may require the incumbent to work on any day or shift, including PMs, nights, weekends, holidays, or on an "on call" basis, necessary to meet mission requirements.
    • This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations, the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
    • This position requires that you obtain and maintain a Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

    In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.     Basic Requirement for Nurse (Clinical):

    Education: A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate's degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. (Note: You must submit a copy of your certification at the time of application.)

    Degree from Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools. (Note: You must submit a copy of your certification with your application package.)

    Licensure: Applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination. In addition, they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. (Note: You must attach a copy of your registration with your application package.)

    Exemption: You are exempt from the basic requirements above if you are a current federal employee occupying a position in the 0610 occupational series and have been continuously employed in this occupational series since September 7, 2017 or before. You will be required to provide approximate documentation to the respective Human Resources Office to validate your status.

    In addition to the above requirements, applicants must meet one of the following experience and/or education requirements:

    Successful completion of a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree from a professional nursing education program or related medical science field

    OR

    At least one or more full years of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-9 grade level) which includes: providing professional nursing care to acute care/critical ill patients within a medical treatment facility; i.e., Medical/Surgical Unit, Acute Care, Critical Care, etc. based on orders of the physician and nursing needs of the patient; completing comprehensive nursing assessments, evaluating patient conditions and behaviors effectively; documenting in electronic medical records AND possession of a diploma, associate's degree, bachelor's degree or master's degree from a professional nursing educational program. This definition of professional nursing experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09). Education
