General Summary:This opportunity is open to Northeastern University students onlyThis is a six-month paid Co-Op position responsible for completing assigned work items in a timely manner and ensuring high quality service to business partners. This role will be responsible for transforming data into actionable business insights. The individual will participate in project work primarily within the functional area, with direction and review by a manager. The individual is expected to take initiative in identifying and executing approaches for analysis to support the assigned projects.
The Co-Op position for Infrastructure/IT will work specifically within Benefits and Contact Center IT. This business drives the technology platforms that enables our claims adjudication capabilities in the U.S. and over 20 contact centers worldwide. This individual will work on our intelligent character recognition project, providing analytic support to validating and improving machine models in our voluntary benefits space.
The Unum Co-Op offers:- Gaining real world experience working for the leader in the supplemental insurance and disability-based employee benefits marketplace and in a professional office setting.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Work with internal partners to understand business questions and identify available data.
- Extract and transform data from existing data stores to create data assets and perform analyses at manager’s direction.
- Apply statistical, simulation and data mining methods to provide guidance in addressing business questions.
- Communication of results and development of implementation strategies.
- Provide significant programming support for implementation of processes and procedures on analytical projects.
- Understand application of current and emerging statistical methods and tools.
- Develop effective partnerships and work effectively with various areas as required
- Operate as a team player which includes backing up peers, constructively addressing conflict and giving/receiving feedback.
- Must strictly adhere to privacy guidelines.
- May perform other duties as assigned or as opportunities arise.
Job Specifications
- Must be enrolled at Northeastern University, preferred major of Data Science or quantitative field
- Prefer satisfactory completion of 2 years of college course work.
- Required GPA of 3.0 in major or overall GPA of 3.0
- Demonstrated openness to mastering new tasks and work processes.
- Solid critical thinking and analytical skills.
- Must be comfortable in a culture of coaching, ongoing feedback, and career development.
- Must be proficient in MS Word, Access, Excel, and Tableau software applications.
- Ability to extract data through a working knowledge of basic SQL.
- Prefer experience in Python, scikit-learn, and Pandas.
- Strong ability to work independently and be self-directed on project or tasked-based work.
- Strong time management skills, ability to prioritize and function in a deadline driven environment.
- Solid communication skills both oral and written.
- All interns must complete a satisfactory background check to be hired.
- Ability to work 40 hours per week based on business needs and during regular business hours Monday - Friday 8am to 5pm.
