Job Description
The Model Maker creates prototype tools, components, and fixtures using advanced fabricating and prototyping methods, and maintains state of the art skills to attain deliverables. Completes work requests on time and in accordance with the business’ priorities to support the engineers’ product development projects, and the production line as needed. Provides effective customer service and communication amongst colleagues regarding the status of the deliverables. Responsible for maintaining a professional, efficient, and safe operating model shop.
Role/Maintains a professional, efficient, and safe operating model shop facility with equipment kept in good working order.
- Recommends machinery and equipment improvements to efficiently fabricate components and assemblies. Purchases, tracks, and properly identifies invoices for equipment, materials, and supplies.
- Responsible for managing workload in accordance with the company’s priorities as established by the Engineering Manager to maximize fabrication efficiency and on-time completion of jobs.
- Communicates effectively with co-workers, contract fabricators, suppliers, and service technicians to develop and maintain collaborative working relationships.
- Provides training to, and shares knowledge base with other model makers and technicians on material properties and best practices of fabrication methods.
- Maintains current skill set and knowledge of industry trends in fabrication and prototyping methods.
- Uses traditional and advanced machining methods (CAM and 4 axis CNC), and may use rapid prototyping methods, such as FDM, to build a range of simple to complex working components to build functional prototypes from drawings, sketches, or verbal directions.
- Must be comfortable with making component iterations to meet design and troubleshooting requirements.
- Create test setups that support the engineering department’s product development needs.
- Uses a working knowledge of CAD to extract data as required. Grows technical database by documenting and organizing machine programs, and tooling and fixture information.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma, Completion of Apprenticeship Program preferred
- Five years experience minimum
- Application of Geometry, Trigonometry, and handbook formulas, decimals, fractions, convert mm
- Knowledge of rapid prototyping methods, CAD and CAM
- CNC proficient – 4 axis CNC required
- Skills in fabricating sheet metal, machining of plastics, steel, aluminum, etc.
- Able to use the shop machines: mills, lathes, drill press, grinders wet and dry, welding tig, mig and oxy acetylene, plasma cutter. Sinker EDM, a plus.
- Able to read prints and drawings and communicate a best approach to provide shop support for projects.
- Strong interpersonal skills & ability to interact in a team environment

Model Shop area is generally kept clean and cool to minimize heat-related expansion of metal work pieces. To minimize the exposure to moving parts, machines have guards and shields. Most computer-controlled machines are totally enclosed, minimizing exposure to noise, dust, and the lubricants used during machining. The performance of this position requires the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses with side shields to shield against bits of flying metal and hearing protection.
Temperature of work area may be affected by outside temperatures and machining. Industrial lighting provided. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly exposed to fumes, airborne particles, climate variances and moving mechanical equipment.
