SummarySpire is searching for a Manager, Construction Engineering in our service territory. This position will be responsible for all capital construction project design, cost estimating, coordination with internal and external stakeholders and project closeout for the assigned Spire operating area.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Manage the Construction Engineering staff to complete all capital construction design, cost estimation, coordination and project closeout work for the assigned area of responsibility
- Ensure the use of the Company’s standards and applicable State and Federal codes and regulations for all design work
- Utilize the Company’s Geographical Information System (GIS) and work asset management system to manage all capital construction design work
- Oversee the detailed specifications, designs, and project plans for all components of natural gas distribution new business, relocation, replacement and reinforcement projects. Design work may also include regulator stations or large volume meters.
- Effectively coordinate with personnel from all involved departments, including other Operations Services teams, Field Operations, Business Development, System Planning, GIS, Right of Way, Environmental, and Project Engineering to ensure the prioritization and timely completion of work
- Manage the construction cost estimating processes, including tracking of estimating accuracy to actual costs, and updating of estimating factors
- Attend site meetings, utility meetings, and pre-construction meetings with representatives from engineering firms, developers, customers, other utilities, and municipalities to determine the best solutions and to reduce the impact of proposed improvements to the Company’s existing facilities
- Provide engineering expertise and project management on special design projects: major pipeline installation, water and bridge crossings, railroad crossings, work with those blasting near the Company’s mains, and calculate stress on pipelines with non-typical amounts of cover
- Ensure that Unit and Department performance and financial objectives are achieved
- Provide general management and direction to subordinates, including delegation and prioritization of work assignments, intermittent instruction and guidance, and review and approval of work produced
- Prepare, and/or review and approve training, development and performance plans and appraisals of all subordinates
- All other duties as assigned.

- Supervises: Area Managers & Individual Contributors
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering required
- Civil, Mechanical, or Chemical degree preferred
- Professional engineering certification preferred
- 6+ years of related engineering experience required
- 6+ years of experience with Spire’s standards or equivalent experience preferred
- Previous supervisory experience preferred
Physical demands, environment and schedule
- Typically, 7:00 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., Monday through Friday.
- Hybrid work schedule – work from home up to 2 days per week
- Field work or field visits as required.
- Additional work time may be required as needed
- Up to 10% travel required
