Job Description
Responsibilities

Diagnostic Laboratory Services, Inc. (DLS) is the largest locally owned and operated laboratory in Hawai`i. We serve the entire state of Hawai`i at over 40 locations, as well as Guam and Saipan. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Performs tests and calculations, documents and reports results following prescribed instructions and predetermined criteria.

2. Adheres to established QA/QC policies and procedures.

2.1 Documents all QA/QC activities.

2.2 Implements corrective action(s) when indicated.

2.3 Performs proficiency testing.

2.4 Evaluates QA/QC data and proficiency testing reports, recognizes problems, and discusses resolution with supervisor.

2.5 May perform QC reviews and follow-up steps, as assigned.

3. Recognizes abnormal or unusual pre-analytical, analytical, post-analytical problems.

3.1 Uses established corrective action policies and judgment to take appropriate follow-up actions.

3.2 Notifies senior or supervisor as appropriate.

3.3 Documents all corrective actions.

4. Independently operates, calibrates, conducts performance checks, and maintains laboratory instruments and equipment, following written criteria.

5. Maintains clean and organized work area.

6. Operates and maintains equipment, such as but not limited to, pagers, computer hardware, printers, telephones, and answering machines.

7. May instruct new employees and students in the performance of routine procedures, following established criteria.

8. Maintains procedures, records, and logs following established procedures.

9. May assist in the revision of procedures.

10. Keeps abreast of medical laboratory changes, new procedures and technology developments.

11. Maintains appropriate levels of supplies and reagents and places orders as needed.

12. May prepare specimens and supplies for transport and/or shipping according to DLS procedures and policies, as required. Follows IATA shipping regulations as required.

13. Performs the following tasks as assigned:

13.1 Phlebotomy

13.2 Other specimen collection

13.3 Accessioning (data entry)

13.4 Processing of specimens

13.5 Forensic Toxicology: specimen collections, Breath Alcohol Testing

13.6 Clerical activities

14. MT III: Acts as a resource person (specialty expert).

15. Identifies and analyzes problems; makes decisions and takes appropriate action(s).

16. Assists internal and external customers with questions, concerns, problems, etc.

17. Communicates relevant information to team members, supervisor, and other appropriate people in a timely and appropriate manner.

18. Supports organizational performance and strategy by providing information and contributing to quality improvements, as appropriate.

19. Observes all safety and health regulations and works in accordance with DLS safety policies and procedures. Reports unsafe acts/conditions and injuries to supervisor promptly.

20. Maintains positive work climate and effective working relationships with internal and external customers.

21. Maintains attendance as scheduled/assigned, consistent with DLS policies and procedures.

22. Attends and/or participates in activities such as, but not limited to, meetings, required in-service programs, continuing education, and competency assessments.

23. Models the behaviors consistent with the mission, vision, and shared values of the organization.

24. Maintains confidentiality of information in accordance with company policies and procedures.

25. Performs other duties as required.

JOB DEMANDS

Communication Demands:

1. Able to read, analyze and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations, as appropriate.

2. Able to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals.

3. Able to effectively communicate information to internal and external customers in informal settings such as one-on-one and small group situations.


Typical Physical Demands:

1. Requires manual and finger dexterity, eye-hand coordination, and corrected vision and hearing to normal range. Distinguishes and identifies color.

2. Requires wearing of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as, but not limited to, lab coats, gloves, face shields, and respiratory protection.

3. May require frequent bending, standing and sitting for extended periods of time.

4. May require repetitive manual motion such as but not limited to pipetting, capping and uncapping specimens.

5. May require keying intermittently for four (4) hours a day.

6. May require frequent walking, climbing of stairs and/or driving to various locations.

7. May require occasional lifting and carrying of supplies weighing up to thirty five (35) pounds.

Typical Working Conditions:

1. Work environment includes conditions common to a hospital/laboratory environment, including working directly with potentially hazardous chemicals and/or patients with communicable diseases. Potential for inadvertent skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenteral contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials.

2. Generally works in an indoor, air-conditioned area.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

1. Medical Technologist - Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or related science and successful completion of an approved Medical Technology internship program, OR

2. Specialist (Categorical) - Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or related science and one (1) year of relevant training in specialty area, OR

3. Medical Laboratory Technician - Associate degree from an accredited School of Clinical Laboratory Sciences and completion of an approved clinical laboratory internship.

Experience:

1. Medical Technologist I: less than two (2) years’ experience as an MT

2. Specialist (Categorical): less than two (2) years’ experience as a Specialist (Categorical)

3. Medical Laboratory Technician II: two (2) or more years of experience as an MLT with one (1) year at DLS with at least a Consistently Meets rating on last Performance Appraisal and no Corrective Action (Verbal or above) within prior year; OR three (3) years relevant experience as MLT.


Certification:

Hawaii:

1. Certified as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), Technologist or Specialist in the assigned/responsible laboratory discipline by an agency recognized by the Hawaii Department of Health State Laboratories Division.

2. Exemption: Current DLS personnel who were licensed as a Technologist, Specialist or Technician by the State of Hawaii prior to the effective date of Hawaii Administrative Rule 11-110 (October 19, 2002)

Guam:

1. Certified as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) in the assigned/responsible laboratory discipline recognized by an agency recognized by the Hawaii Department of Health State Laboratories Division.

2. Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) certification preferred.

Saipan:

1. Certified as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or Technologist or Specialist in the assigned/responsible laboratory discipline recognized by 42 CFR 493 (CLIA) preferred.

Licensure:

1. State license as a Technologist, Specialist or Technician, as applicable.

Skills:

1. Ability to communicate effectively in English, both in verbal and written form.

2. Ability to work effectively both independently and with a team.

3. Excellent customer service skills

Other Qualifications, as applicable:

1. Valid driver’s license and/or able to travel between business locations.

2. If required to drive a company vehicle, a current acceptable abstract will be required.

3. Positions performing bench coverage in the Blood Bank department must possess a current Hawaii State license as a Medical Technologist, unless otherwise approved by the Laboratory Director.

Regular Full-Time Position
Must be available Sunday through Saturday as early as 6:00 am to as late as 6:00 pm, including weekends and holidays.
Must be flexible with schedule changes to meet operational needs.
