Medical Support Technician (EMT-B)

Summary:

Under the supervision of the Medical/Laboratory Director and Center Management ensure donor suitability, product integrity and the continued good health of donors through the compliance with Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations and Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) Manual guidelines.

Primary Responsibilities for Role:

Promote customer satisfaction through appropriate interaction and responsiveness to customer needs.

Selection of suitable plasmapheresis donors by performing physical examinations and taking medical histories on all donors through the use of FDA approved Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) Manual (with particular detailed attention to communications related to AIDS information and plasmapheresis informed consent) current State and Federal requirements, OSHA, CLIA, CGMP, all internal company all internal company procedures and personal education and experience.

Trained to perform all duties and responsibilities of a Donor Center Technician.

Performs evaluations of any history of illness or medications to ensure continued donor suitability. . Ensures Donor medical information is complete and accurate prior to donation.

Responsible for donor awareness to potential hazards.

Administration of donor consent form.

Builds rapport with donors to ensure overall customer satisfaction with the center to support long term donation.

Maintain supplies necessary to perform job duties.

Maintains and ensures proper sanitation and cleaning of equipment and work areas between donors.

Ensures Donor and Staff confidentiality

Reports all unsafe situations or conditions to Center Management.

Performs other duties as required.

Additional Responsibilities:

Works under direct supervision until fully trained and then general supervision. Handles all donor screening processes and assists in the performance of physical exams, administration of consent and suitability decisions. Reviews complex cases with Medical or Medical Director. May assist with company research trials.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Good assessment skills with ability to handle cases. Excellent Customer Service skills. Good understanding of both verbal and written English. Where applicable written and verbal bi-lingual skills. Ability to understand and follow SOPs and protocols. The ability to work in a high paced highly regulated environment. Following strict protocols in regards to audits and detailed documentation. Computer proficient in word processing programs.

Education

Educated and currently certified/licensed in the state of employment and according to state requirements as an Emergency Medical Technician Basic or Intermediate. Current CPR certification required.

Experience

Typically requires no related experience. Experience with plasma or whole blood in a medical or cGMP regulated environment preferred.

Equivalency

Depending on the area of assignment, directly related experience or a combination of directly related education and experience and/or competencies may be considered in place of the stated requirements.

Occupational Demands

Occupational Demands Form # 71: Work is performed in a plasma center. Exposure to biological fluids with potential exposure to infectious organisms. Exposure to electrical office and laboratory equipment. Exposure to extreme cold below 32 degrees F while working in plasma freezer. Personal protective equipment required such as protective eyewear, garments, gloves and cold-gear. Work is performed sitting for 4 to 6 hours per day and does require standing, bending and twisting neck and waist for 1-2 hours per day. Frequent hand movement of both hands with the ability to make fast, simple, movements of the fingers, hands, and wrists. Ability to make precise coordinated movements, of the fingers to grasp and manipulate objects. Frequent foot movement; may infrequently squat, crouch or sit on one's heels. May walk up to 1-2 hours per day. Light lifting of 15lbs. with a maximum lift of 50lbs. May reach below shoulder height. Hearing acuity essential. Color perception/discrimination, near vision and far vision correctable in one eye to 20/30 and to 20/100 in the other eye. Able to comprehend and follow instructions to complete assigned tasks. Must possess the ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences. Must perform within the guidance of both oral and written instructions. Performs a wide range of complex tasks as dictated by variable demands and changing conditions with little predictability as to their occurrence. Relates sensitive information to diverse groups.
