The primary role of the Medical scribe is to relieve the practitioner of clerical and secretarial duties; thus allowing the practitioner to focus more directly on clinical care. The scribe is an unlicensed individual and exclusively non-clinical.
They do not examine patients and do not engage in any type of patient care. A scribe's role is limited to documentation and efficiency management for the practitioner.
Responsibilities
- Accurate, timely charting of patient encounters, including but not limited to patient history, physical exams, diagnostic findings, lab and test results, consultations with other providers, treatment course, diagnoses, discharge instructions, and prescriptions
- Documents the correct time of patient care related activities, including practitioner to practitioner communication, family communication and re-examination of the patient.
- Send, track, and compile imaging orders, clearances, labs, and referrals.
- Assist with all aspects of patient coordination of care as deemed necessary
- Document results of laboratory and radiographic studies as discussed by provider.
Other duties as assigned, including, but not limited to training other Scribes and staff
Compliance with policies, including those relating to the confidentiality of patient information
Assist with all aspects of patient coordination of care as deemed necessary
- Send, track, and compile imaging orders, clearances, labs, and referrals.
- Refill any patient prescriptions as directed by the provider
- Ensures the practitioner reviews all documentation completed by the Scribe when the patient encounter has concluded. This includes making any necessary amendments and signing the chart. The practitioner is ultimately responsible for documentation of the patient’s encounter.
Requirements: Qualifications
- Experience using an EMR system and fluent with medical terminology
- Strong attention to detail
Minimum of six (6) months of a medical group or healthcare back-office work experience or applicable healthcare work experience required
Must be able to type 60+ WPM
Knowledge of policies and procedures with regard to patient care in the clinics
Knowledge of patient confidentiality, state laws, HIPAA regulations, and medical records procedure Minimum of six (6) months of a medical group or healthcare back-office work experience or applicable healthcare work experience required
Dependable and on-time
- Ability to multi-tasking and be detail oriented
- Ability to keep up in a fast-paced environment
- Medical Office Experience: 2 years (Required)
